OCLC and the Internet

OCLC is sponsoring a series of three one-hour meetings to provide you an
opportunity to learn and ask about OCLC's current and planned activities
related to the description and access of Internet resources. Join us for
a meeting of your choice or attend all three. The meetings will combine
presentations, discussion, and questions and answers.
The meetings are free and open to the public. No preregistration is
required, but seating is limited to 300.
2:00-3:00 p.m. PURLs (Persistent URLs)
What are PURLs? What problems do they solve? How have they been implemented?
How do they fit with URNs? What do they mean to you? This session provides an
overview of PURLs, current usage, and future plans. Presenters: Stuart Weibel,
Erik Jul, Eric Miller
3:00-4:00 p.m. Cataloging Internet Resources
This session provides a brief update of the OCLC Internet Cataloging project,
including preliminary findings and future directions. Presenter: Erik Jul
4:00-5:00 p.m. Metadata
What is Metadata? How is it used? Why do we need it? How does it relate
to cataloging? This session presents an overview of two OCLC co-sponsored
Metadata Workshops, current activities, and future plans. Presenters: Stuart
Weibel, Eric Miller
