I'd like to add some comments on the use of LC Subjects as an organizing
approach:
It seems to me that using LC subjects might not do for you what you
want. If you want a hierarchical setup you'd be much better off with LC
classification (or Dewey, for that matter). LC is currently exploring
the possibility of transferring the LC classifications to the new MARC
Classification Format, which has some real possibilities for the kind of
use you're considering. Part of the format is designed to link to
controlled and uncontrolled subject terms, which gives it the
flexibility to link to LCSH, AAT plus the back-of-the-book indexes to
the classifications.
Unfortunately, there is not yet a machine-readable version of the
classifications, and it will likely be some time yet before they are
