Subject: Dial Access Circulation, FY 1992
Beginning in fiscal year 1990, the 40 member libraries of the Illinois
Library Computer Systems Organization (ILCSO) have offered public dial
access to their holdings to 2,700 other Illinois libraries. Such access
has been made possible by allowing libraries in Illinois to connect
with ILLINET Online, an online catalog and circulation system shared
by the 40 ILCSO libraries. Qualified Illinois libraries may search the
system and initiate remote circulation transactions for desired items.
Dial access circulation activity was at record levels during FY 1992.
Nearly 500 Illinois libraries of all types initiated 56,397 circulation
transactions against the holdings of the 40 ILCSO libraries, representing
an increase of 26.9% over FY 1991. Public libraries led the way with
58.3% of the dial access circulation activity, followed by academic
libraries (21.1%), school libraries (12.2%), and special libraries (8.5%).
