Subject: microcomputer lab management software
I am in search of computer software that can assist us with the
management of our large (70+ stations) Microcomputer Lab. We have
approximate equal numbers of IBM-PC compatibles and Apple
Macintosh systems. Many, but not all, of these are attached to a
local area network. The software I am looking for should function
in one of the following two ways:
= software that will run on a single centrally located
microcomputer that Lab users will be asked to stop at prior to
entering the Lab to "sign in" -- this software should validate
an incoming user as an authorized user by checking their user
ID against an installed database of authorized users. The
software must be capable of generating statistical reports of
user-provided information such as type of computer being used,
application being used, length of usage, etc. One such package
is Lab Master by Glen Canyon Software of Altadena, CA. I saw a
demo of this Mac-based program several years ago, but have been
unsuccessful in locating it in recent months. The company has
either moved or gone out of business. Judging from the demo
copy of the program I have, this would be an excellent solution
for us.
= Another more ambitious solution would be to have software
that runs over the local area network that would require users
to "sign in" at the individual workstation and have the
software maintain the same statistical information as described
above. We are presently using the Saber Menu System and Saber
Meter on our networked IBM compatible systems, but this does
not help us at all with our Macintosh systems.
We need something that is user-friendly, unobtrusive and easy to
use as our service desk is rarely staffed by technical staff --
usually we are staffed only by clerical staff and/or student
assistants. Any suggestions, comments or leads you can provide
will be greatly appreciated.

From: Ing Claudia Xhonane Ortiz Meza <cxortiz@mtecv2.mty.itesm.mx>
I'm a student of Management Information Systems (Masters degree) at
Technological Institute of High Studies of Monterrey (Instituto
Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, ITESM, Mexico), and
I'm preparing mi thesis on collection department automation. Actually,
my thesis is based on serials collections, and I'd like to know about
experiences in this area, references, points of view, suggestions, etc.
The fact is that I want to design a Data Base Model for this area, from
a traditional performance, so that we could improve and take advantage
of available resources, as human, hardware, information, etc.
Right up until now, I've investigated in almost 70 articles about, but
unfortunately, they haven't been deep on the exactly I want..., just some cases,
some tendencies some Co. tendencies, etc.
But nothing specially on serials collections.
I think something could help me is the experience of other
universities, how did they started, why, waht kind of alternatives did
they have, why decided what they decided, which have been their
evolution, what could they suggest to start on, how important is to do
this job, etc.
I'll appreciate any help, please forgive my poor english, and thanks in
advance for your time.
Sincerely yours,
Xhonane.
