I have one point to add to the many good ones so far:

if you already know C, sh, awk, and sed, reading Perl scripts is a
snap.  Writing them is also easy, though there are occasional gotchas,
that are easily resolved with the Camel book.

Getting optimal performance et al takes some more learning, but less
then other languages I have climbed the learning curve with.
