Sendmail Constipation

Hi,
I asked for hints as to why moving several systems onto a different
(new) subnet would cause mail problems. Mail sent to a large mail
alias would cause a runaway mail process on my main mailserver and
the mail wouldm't get delivered. That wasn't all of it.

The problem showed up WHEN I moved the systems over to the new subnet
and only when the systems on the subnet tried to send mail to SOME
aliases (usually large ones). I thought I had problems with routes
or with that damned configuration file (you know, the one written in
 god only knows what).

I eliminated aliases, configuration, addressing rules, and routes.
What else would do it? The passwd file.

1. The root password around here is common knowlege.
2. Folks edit things as they see fit, when they see fit.
3. Someone (could even have been me) deleted a colon in the
passwd file on our NIS server.

The resulting broken passwd map broke sendmail (more broken than it
usually is).

Its been fun....
