I just called 800-SOS-APPL and was told that 1.03 is the version that Apple
is working on distributing, and that it is supposed to fix:
"power issues, clock issues, handwriting recognition, and one datebook
error"
So while it isn't as good as is going to get, it's the real McCoy, at least
according to the guy I talked to. Just keep in mind that a backup of a
1.03 Newton isn't anywhere near official... if you're worried about getting
a "genuine" release, wait until next week when Apple figures out what the
heck it's doing. Since I'm going to be off the net for a few weeks, I'm
going to risk the upgrade, hackish as it is.
BTW, the guy at Apple didn't seem bothered at all that 1.03 is bouncing
around the net. I don't imagine that would translate to "Apple doesn't
care if this file is posted to FTP sites" but he didn't seem to mind if
people copied 1.03 to each other.
BTW, I just installed 1.03 on my machine as well as my office-mate's, and
it seems to work fine. Knock on wood.
