It sounds like two things have gotten a little crossed, at least compared
to what I've heard other places.
Sweet Pea is the code name for the Apple/Toshiba Script-X player, a
portable unit with an LCD display and CD-ROM drive. Script-X is the
standard from Kaleida, the Apple/IBM joint venture defining a platform
independent multimedia standard. Sweet Pea is from Apple's Personal
Interactive Electronics group (Apple PIE), which is the same group that is
producing Newtons, but Sweet Pea isn't a Newton, isn't pen-based, and
doesn't run Newton software.
IMO, Kaleida and Script-X could be a huge hit, since it allows information
publishers to produce a single CD-ROM which can be read by anyone with a
Mac, Windows PC, Sweet Pea portable,
There's also a larger *Newton* that is anticipated to be out by the end of
the year. It's the 'Slate', an 8x10 Newton. It's expected to be out by
the end of the year, and while being more powerful (more RAM, long range
IR, larger display, more PCMCIA slots) it's rumored to cost the same as, or
perhaps even less than, the MessagePad, due to the fact that they can use
larger, less expensive components and have more battery power in the larger
case. I would guess that it would come with different software tools built
in.
