I spent twenty minutes with a newt at CompUSA over the weekend and found a
few things which I'd expected were missing. I especially missed having more
drag & drop interaction with objects on the newt...
For instance... I was using the calendar and had scheduled a meeting from
10-11am on August 12th with Ellen. I could easily drag the meeting to any
other time on August 12th, by dragging the timeline (my name for that heavy
stretched-diamond bar) around the page. But I wanted to drag the meeting to
August 18th on the calendar in the upper right corner of the page and drop
it off there, so that the appointment would move to the 18th instead of the
12th. I expected that newt would move me to the page for the 18th along with
the meeting (after all, I move to the 18th if I simply tap on it). Sigh.
This didn't work. Instead I have to go through a multiple step process of
saving to the clipboard, moving to the new day, then grabbing from the
clipboard.
My wish... I wish that objects in the Newton interface were always made as
intelligent as possible. I want the calendar in that upper right corner to
accept dropped items, not just pen taps.
Of course, I only spent twenty minutes with the newt-beast. I probably
missed something obvious that lets me do just what I want to do. It was a
blast to fiddle with it, and if I had an expendable $700 lying around, I'd
grab on right away.
