Apple Readies its First Newton Product--a Communications
Assistant--for Shipping
CUPERTINO, California--July 22, 1993--A revolution in communication
is at hand. Apple Computer, Inc. today announced that its first
product based on Newton technology--a handheld communication
assistant--has passed its final milestone before volume manufacture.
The product's "Golden Master"--or final software image--has been
released to Sharp Corporation for the beginning of the product's
manufacturing.
The product remains on schedule for availability in the United
States this summer, and in key international markets later in the year.
The company will formally unveil the product at a special event on
August 2, in Boston, Massachusetts.
"We're counting the days," said Gaston Bastiaens, vice president and
general manager of Apple's Personal Interactive Electronics (PIE)
Division. "In a short time, a new era in communications will begin.
And the way people share information and collaborate will change
forever."
The handheld communications assistant is the first of a family of
products Apple plans to introduce based on Newton technology and
incorporating Newton Intelligence in the coming years.
