Just happened to me on an unfrequently backuped machine about an hour ago:
paisa% configure --prefix=~paisa/test
... (lots of output)
paisa% make; make install
... (lots more of output)
paisa% cd
paisa% ls test
ls: test: No such file or directory
paisa% ls
Mail/ ... urop/ ~paisa/
paisa% rm -r ~paisa
* poof *
Suddenly, I feel a strong urge to cry...
