A Buddhist temple in Hiroshima, Japan, will soon open a virtual
graveyard on the Internet. Apparently it will include representation
of real graves at the temple, so that relatives who live too far away
to visit in person, can "visit" and pay their respects via
the Net. And it will include virtual graves for those whose remains
are missing or have been destroyed. Already, some people whose
relatives graves were destroyed in the 1995 Kobe earthquake have
applied for virtual graves.

The real Kanonin temple belongs to the Shingon Buddhist sect
has about 70,000 adherents. It currently runs an Internet cafe.
