Don't Cry For Me Engineering
(with apologies to Tim Rice...)
It won't be easy.
You'll think it strange,
When I try to explain my research,
That I still need your nod
after all that I've done.
You won't believe me.
All you will see is
a frosh you once knew,
Although she's got viewgraphs and slides,
An upstart researcher to you.
I had to let it happen, to graduate.
Couldn't stay all my life an RA.
Looking out of the window,
Staying out of the sun.
So I chose AI,
Hacking around, trying everything new,
But nothing impressed me at all.
I never expected it to.
Don't cry for me Engineering.
The truth is I never left you,
All through my fuzzy days,
My business leanings,
I kept equations, and metric distance.
As for heuristics, and what's assumed,
The simplifications I made,
Though they seemed to the faculty all I had done.
Suboptimality is not the solution I wanted to give.
The answer was there all the time,
The optimal isn't robust.
Don't cry for me Engineering.
The truth is I never left you,
All through my fuzzy days,
My business leanings,
I kept equations.
Don't cry for me Engineering.
The truth is I shall not leave you.
Though it may get harder,
For you to see me.
I'm a Professor
of Engineering.

Maybe just the Infinite Corridor...
