Unwanted flames can be both a source of frustration and a waste of time for
Internet users. I describe a prototype system for flame recognition, Smokey.
Smokey makes use of a parser and regular expressions to apply 45 rules to
input sentences. A decision tree based on the scoring of 720 training
messages is then used to predict whether or not a test message is a flame.
Smokey is able to identify over 50% of flames (relative to human ratings)
while misclassifying less than 2% of non-flames.
