Strange, you directories should be trashed too if arla fetched the
files from the afs-server the wrong way. So the bug is probably in
the FreeBSD3.0 xfs-code.

What do you get from a ktrace ? 
(something like:
`ktrace -f /tmp/foo cat /afs/wam.umd.edu/home/wam/c/u/culverk/home/.reqrc
 kdump -f /tmp/foo')

What does the xfs-debugging think if you turn it on i xfs/bsd/xfs_deb.c 
(esp. XFSVNOPS) when you cat the file ?
