The town of Surfside Beach has been running background checks on a variety of people, checks that include extensive personal information and more.

Town administrator Micki Fellner said the searches, run through Transunion, are strictly for criminal background checks or pre-employment screenings.

But one out-of-town woman said she doesnt fall into either of those two categories. And she never gave anyone permission to do the background investigation.

The Herald has obtained a copy of one such comprehensive search that was run on non-resident Nitza Melendez.
The Florida woman said she has no idea why the town conducted the search and she never gave anyone the authority to do so.

The 13-page report details her vital information including Social Security information, drivers license number, phone numbers, previous addresses and information on family members.

Much of the report gives details of a house on Seaside Drive in Surfside owned by her brother.

Melendez said her brother Hector has a home in Surfside Beach but she isnt on the deed of it and has nothing to do with the property.

I dont know why they would do such a search, she said. This is awful. With identity theft so bad these days, anyone could do terrible things with all that information.

At the last Surfside Beach town council meeting, councilmember Randle Stevens asked Fellner if she had ordered any background checks on town citizens or others. Fellner said she had not personally run any such checks.
