Carrie Fisher was the child of a show-business family. "The daughter of fam=
ous parents," she wrote in her memoir "Wishful Drinking," which originated =
as a one-woman show. "One an icon, the other a consort to icons." She enter=
ed popular culture as a princess in peril and endures as something much mor=
e complicated and interesting. Many things, really: a rebel commander; a wi=
tty internal critic of the celebrity machine; a teller of comic tales, true=
and embellished; an inspiring and cautionary avatar of excess and resilien=
ce; an emblem of the honesty we crave (and so rarely receive) from beloved =
purveyors of make-believe. When I heard the news of Ms. Fisher's death on T=
uesday, what immediately popped into my mind was not "Star Wars" but "Rosem=
ary's Baby" =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=E2=80=9D that unforgettable episode from Season=
2 of "30 Rock," in which she turns up as a legendary and colossally diffic=
ult television writer, Rosemary Howard. [ Read Carrie Fisher's obituary ] L=
iz Lemon, the present-day television
writer played (and created) by Tina Fey, idolizes Rosemary, seeing her as a=
pioneer and a spiritual mother. But even symbolic mother-daughter relation=
ships have a way of turning dysfunctional, and Liz comes to see Rosemary le=
ss as a beacon than a warning =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=E2=80=9D an image of the cyni=
cal, resentful, washed-up dingbat Liz herself might well become. Continue r=
eading the main story Advertisement Continue reading the main story Emily N=
ussbaum, the New Yorker's television critic, remarked on Twitter that the e=
pisode was "the key-to-all-mythologies of female comedy," which may actuall=
y be an understatement. The character of Rosemary Howard certainly embodies=
the glories and contradictions of second-wave feminism, and Liz's ambivale=
nce about her is a barbed and brilliant illustration of the anxieties of fe=
male comic influence. But the casting of Ms. Fisher =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=E2=80=
=9D whose performance on the show is somehow at once wildly winking and com=
pletely on-script =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=E2=80=9D adds about 12 dimensions of meta=
 Video
Carrie Fisher and the Legacy of Leia Manohla Dargis, a film critic for The =
New York Times, remembers Carrie Fisher, whose career was defined =C3=A2=E2=
=82=AC=E2=80=9D for better or for worse =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=E2=80=9D by her rol=
e as Princess Leia in the "Star Wars" films. By AINARA TIEFENTH=C3=83=E2=80=
=9ELER and SHANE O'NEILL on Publish Date December 27, 2016. Photo by Sara K=
rulwich/The New York Times. Watch in Times Video =C3=82=C2=BB embed Anyone =
watching that episode will already know that Liz Lemon is a rabid "Star War=
s" fan. Her default Halloween costume is Princess Leia Organa. Later, when =
she wants to get out of jury duty, Liz will coil her hair over her ears and=
dress in a belted linen djellaba, confident that no judge would ever impan=
el such a cosplaying nerd. She's wrong about that, and also wrong to sell o=
ut her Leia devotion, treating it as a source of embarrassment rather than =
power and pride. The princess allows Liz =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=E2=80=9D and not o=
nly Liz =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=E2=80=9D to be both geek and warrior, sex symbol an=
d samurai, free spirit and prisoner of the corporate
Death Star. Liz Lemon has two mothers, both played by Carrie Fisher. That s=
tatement can stand as a fictional index of Ms. Fisher's extensive real-worl=
d influence. Princess Leia =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=E2=80=9D now General Organa of t=
he Rebel Alliance =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=E2=80=9D will always define her as an act=
ress, something she claimed, in a recent Rolling Stone interview, not to mi=
nd. "I like Princess Leia," she said. "I like how she was feisty. I like ho=
w she killed Jabba the Hutt." That feistiness has been Leia's principal leg=
acy, the early sign of a shift in the understanding of female heroism =C3=
=A2=E2=82=AC=E2=80=9D and the meanings of the word princess =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=
=E2=80=9D that has rippled through popular culture in the past 40 years. Le=
ia is a foremother of Hermione Granger and Katniss Everdeen and of countles=
s latter-day Disney princesses. She also foretold the recent, somewhat bela=
ted feminist turn in the "Star Wars" cycle itself. All of a sudden, and at =
long last, Leia is not the only battle-ready heroine in the galaxy, having =
been joined by Rey in "The Force
Awakens" and Jyn in "Rogue One." Ms. Fisher's legacy may rest at least as m=
uch on her literary voice, on the alter egos she created on the page, as on=
any character she played onscreen. She was hardly the first or the only Ho=
llywood figure to spill the beans about sex, drugs and other show-business =
shenanigans. Nor was she unique among writers in the way she mined her own =
painful history of addiction and mental illness for harrowing and humorous =
copy. But "Postcards From the Edge," her 1987 roman =C3=83=C2=A0 clef about=
a movie star named Suzanne Vale with a cocaine problem and a difficult mov=
ie-star mom, bristles with a bravery and candor that still feels groundbrea=
king. She went there, long before that was a catchphrase, and before that p=
articular there was such a crowded piece of real estate. In her Rolling Sto=
ne interview and elsewhere, Ms. Fisher liked to cite Dorothy Parker as an i=
nspiration. She carried that tradition forward, and the frank, funny, confe=
ssionally inclined and
dirty-minded women who now flourish on television and in print =C3=A2=E2=82=
=AC=E2=80=9D the list is too long; they know who they are =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=
=E2=80=9D are in her debt. "You're my kid!" Rosemary Howard cries out to Li=
z Lemon. An echo of the famous assertion of paternity in the "Star Wars" sa=
ga. And also an acknowledgment of Carrie Fisher's own undeniable status as =
a matriarch.

> Carrie Fisher was the child of a show-business family. &quot;The daughter=
of famous parents,&quot; she wrote in her memoir &quot;Wishful Drinking,&q=
uot; which originated as a one-woman show. &quot; One an icon, the other a c=
onsort to icons.&quot; She entered popular culture as a princess in peril a=
nd endures as something much more complicated and interesting. Many things,=
really: a rebel commander; a witty internal critic of the celebrity machin=
e; a teller of comic tales, true and embellished; an inspiring and cautiona=
ry avatar of excess and resilience; an emblem of the honesty we crave (and =
so rarely receive) from beloved purveyors of make-believe. When I heard the=
news of Ms. Fisher's death on Tuesday, what immediately popped into my min=
d was not &quot;Star Wars&quot; but &quot;Rosemary's Baby&quot; &acirc;?? t=
hat unforgettable episode from Season 2 of &quot;30 Rock,&quot; in which sh=
e turns up as a legendary and colossally difficult television writer, Rosem=

levision writer played (and created) by Tina Fey, idolizes Rosemary, seeing=
her as a pioneer and a spiritual mother. But even symbolic mother-daughter=
relationships have a way of turning dysfunctional, and Liz comes to see Ro=
semary less as a beacon than a warning &acirc;?? an image of the cynical, r=
esentful, washed-up dingbat Liz herself might well become. Continue reading=

m, the New Yorker's television critic, remarked on Twitter that the episode=
 was &quot;the key-to-all-mythologies of female comedy,&quot; which may act=
ually be an understatement. The character of Rosemary Howard certainly embo=
dies the glories and contradictions of second-wave feminism, and Liz's ambi=
valence about her is a barbed and brilliant illustration of the anxieties o=
f female comic influence. But the casting of Ms. Fisher &acirc;?? whose per=

Liz Lemon is a rabid &quot;Star Wars&quot; fan. Her default Halloween cost=
ume is Princess Leia Organa. Later, when she wants to get out of jury duty,=
Liz will coil her hair over her ears and dress in a belted linen djellaba,=
confident that no judge would ever impanel such a cosplaying nerd. She's w=
rong about that, and also wrong to sell out her Leia devotion, treating it =
as a source of embarrassment rather than power and pride. The princess allo=
ws Liz &acirc;?? and not only Liz &acirc;?? to be both geek and warrior, se=
x symbol and samurai, free spirit and prisoner of the corporate Death Star.=
Liz Lemon has two mothers, both played by Carrie Fisher. That statement ca=
n stand as a fictional index of Ms. Fisher's extensive real-world influence=
Princess Leia &acirc;?? now General Organa of the Rebel Alliance &acirc;?=
? will always define her as an actress, something she claimed, in a recent =
Rolling Stone interview, not to mind. &quot;I like Princess Leia,&quot; she=
said. &quot;I like how she was feisty. I like how she killed Jabba the Hut=
t.&quot; That feistiness has been Leia's principal legacy, the early sign o=
f a shift in the understanding of female heroism &acirc;?? and the meanings=
of the word princess &acirc;?? that has rippled through popular culture in=
the past 40 years. Leia is a foremother of Hermione Granger and Katniss Ev=
erdeen and of countless latter-day Disney princesses. She also foretold the=
recent, somewhat belated feminist turn in the &quot;Star Wars&quot; cycle =
itself. All of a sudden, and at long last, Leia is not the only battle-read=
y heroine in the galaxy, having been joined by Rey in &quot; The Force Awake=
ns&quot; and Jyn in &quot;Rogue One.&quot; Ms. Fisher's legacy may rest at =
least as much on her literary voice, on the alter egos she created on the p=
age, as on any character she played onscreen. She was hardly the first or t=
he only Hollywood figure to spill the beans about sex, drugs and other show=
-business shenanigans. Nor was she unique among writers in the way she mine=
d her own painful history of addiction and mental illness for harrowing and=
humorous copy. But &quot;Postcards From the Edge,&quot; her 1987 roman &At=
ilde;&nbsp; clef about a movie star named Suzanne Vale with a cocaine probl=
em and a difficult movie-star mom, bristles with a bravery and candor that =
still feels groundbreaking. She went there, long before that was a catchphr=
ase, and before that particular there was such a crowded piece of real esta=
te. In her Rolling Stone interview and elsewhere, Ms. Fisher liked to cite =
Dorothy Parker as an inspiration. She carried that tradition forward, and t=
he frank, funny, confessionally inclined and dirty-minded women who now flo=
urish on television and in print &acirc;?? the list is too long; they know =
who they are &acirc;?? are in her debt. &quot; You're my kid!&quot; Rosemary=
Howard cries out to Liz Lemon. An echo of the famous assertion of paternit=
y in the &quot;Star Wars&quot; saga. And also an acknowledgment of Carrie F=
isher's own undeniable status as a matriarch. </p>
