forced out by the blaze's intensity."Not for (not) trying, that's for sure,"
Conte said. There was somebody else trying to save the girls, too
their grandfather, Lomer Johnson. One of the girls, found dead just
inside a window, had been placed on a pile of books, apparently
so he could reach in and grab her after he jumped out.Instead,
authorities say, Johnson fell through the roof outside the window and was
found dead in the rear of the house. He and his wife, Pauline,
both of Southbury, had been visiting their daughter for the holidays. The
grandmother also died in the fire along with 10-year-old Lily and 7-year-old
twins Grace and Sarah. One girl was found dead on the third floor,
and the body of another was found with the grandmother's at the
bottom of the stairs leading to the third floor.Thomas Olshanski, a spokesman
for the U.S. Fire Administration, the lead federal agency for fire data
collection and public fire education, said the firefighters who were

TEHRAN, Iran Iran's navy chief warned Wednesday that his country can
easily close the strategic Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the
Persian Gulf, the passageway through which a sixth of the world's oil
flows. It was the second such warning in two days. On Tuesday, Vice
President Mohamed Reza Rahimi threatened to close the strait, cutting off oil
exports, if the West imposes sanctions on Iran's oil shipments. With concern growing
over a possible drop-off in Iranian oil supplies, a senior Saudi oil
official said Gulf Arab nations are ready to offset any loss of
Iranian crude. That reassurance led to a drop in world oil prices. In
New York, benchmark crude fell 77 cents to $100.57 a barrel in
morning trading. Brent crude fell 82 cents to $108.45 a barrel in
London."Closing the Strait of Hormuz is very easy for Iranian naval forces,"
Adm. Habibollah Sayyari told state-run Press TV. "Iran has comprehensive control over
the strategic waterway," the navy chief said.Th

ge number of vehicles and army jeeps. After showing taped footage of mourners
and documentaries of Kim Jong Il, state TV began airing the procession,
showing cars moving slowly through the snowy city, led by a limousine
carrying a huge portrait of a smiling Kim Jong Il.Wednesday's procession had
a stronger military presence than 1994.Kim Jong Il, who ushered in a
"military first" era when he took power, celebrated major occasions with lavish,
meticulously choreographed parades designed to show off the nation's military might, such
as the October 2010 display when he introduced his son to the
world.Kim Jong Un was made a four-star general and appointed a vice
chairman of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party last
year. After the funeral, the young Kim is expected to cement his power
by formally assuming command of the 1.2 million-strong military, and becoming general
secretary of the Workers' Party and chairman of the party's Central Military

etas and the Gulf cartel. Also Tuesday, federal prosecutors announced that a former
high-ranking federal police official has been sentenced to 10 years in prison
for helping the Sinaloa drug cartel. The case of former regional police security
coordinator Javier Herrera Valles had been a scandal and for some a
cause celebre, in part because he was arrested after having publicly accused
some of his superiors of corruption or incompetence. The Attorney General's Office said
in a statement Tuesday that Herrera Valles had been convicted of organized
crime charges for aiding the Sinaloa drug cartel, Mexico's most powerful gang.He
was arrested in 2008, around the same time Mexico arrested a number
of high-ranking officials for collaborating with drug cartels.

judge said such teaching promotes activism against white people, promotes racial resentment
and advocates ethnic solidarity.Huppenthal has 30 days to accept, reject or modify
the ruling. If he accepts the judge's decision, the district has about
30 days to appeal the ruling in Superior Court."In the end, I
made a decision based on the totality of the information and facts
gathered during my investigation a decision that I felt was
best for all students in the Tucson Unified School District." Huppenthal said
in a written statement.Messages left for a district spokeswoman Tuesday night weren't
immediately returned. In the past, district officials have said they can't afford
to the financial hit that Huppenthal's decision would bring. The battle over the

nt Bashar Assad's authoritarian rule began. The League said a team of
12 visited Homs on Monday. On Tuesday, tens of thousands of defiant Syrian
protesters had thronged the streets shortly after authorities withdrew tanks from Homs,
in the first sign the regime was complying with the League's plan
to end the 9-month-old crackdown against dissent. After agreeing to the League's pullback
plan on Dec 19, the regime intensified its crackdown on dissent; government
troops killed hundreds in the past week and Syria was condemned internationally
for flouting the spirit of the agreement. The U.N. says more than 5,000
people have been killed since March in the political violence across Syria.
