An Italian oil tanker was hijacked close to the coast of Oman
early Tuesday morning in an area where Somali pirates are known to
operate, AFP reported. The ship, which is owned by Marnavi, was reportedly carrying
18 people. The Italian navy was informed of the incident and the
company has been in touch with the foreign ministry, the report said. There
were six Italians, five Ukrainians and seven Indians onboard when the ship
came under attack in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The ship was
carrying a cargo of caustic soda to the Mediterranean. On Dec. 21, another
Italian oil tanker was freed after being in pirate captivity for more
than 10 months after a ransom was paid, the report said.Ransoms for
tankers often reach into the millions of dollars. The long coastline of
war-ravaged Somalia provides a perfect haven for pirate gangs preying on shipping
off the East African coast. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

all sites used for detention.HRW's report, issued late Tuesday, echoes charges made
by Syrian opposition members that thousands of detainees were being transferred to
military sites ahead of the observers' visit.Syrian officials have said the Arab
League monitors will have unrestricted access to trouble spots but will not
be allowed to visit sensitive military sites."Syria has shown it will stop
at nothing to undermine independent monitoring of its crackdown," said Sarah Leah
Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. She said it was
essential for the Arab League "to draw clear lines" regarding access to
detainees, and be willing to speak out when those lines are crossed.SANA
said the prisoners released Wednesday did not include those with "blood on
their hands."Last month, Syrian authorities released 2,645 prisoners in three batches but
activists and critics say thousands more who were picked

which allows travelers from 36 nations with good relationships with the U.S.
to temporarily visit without a visa. Travel proponents want to add nations
whose residents are unlikely to illegally move to the U.S., including Argentina,
Brazil, Poland and Taiwan.Tourists from the rest of the world, including India,
China, Mexico and other nations with affluent travelers looking to use their
passports, must obtain a nonimmigrant visa. The process can be expensive and
time-consuming.People living far from a visa processing center must arrange travel to
the interview location, not knowing whether they will be approved. Roughly 78
percent of all tourist visas were approved so far in 2011.Tourism proponents
want the department to embrace videoconferencing as a way to interview more
people quickly. The department has no plans to implement videoconferencing interviews because

bill, which Nelson opposed.Nelson has vehemently denied horse-trading with Senate Majority Leader
Harry Reid for the deal, but during the debate while home in
Nebraska, Nelson, a once very popular former governor, and his wife were
