STAMFORD, Conn. A Christmas morning fire that killed a couple and
three of their grandchildren was devastating to firefighters who rushed into the
engulfed home twice frantically looking for the victims before they were beaten

DULUTH, Minn. A man charged with opening fire in a Minnesota
courthouse and wounding two people after being convicted in a sex case
has died at a Duluth hospital.St. Louis County Sheriff Ross Litman tells
the Duluth News Tribune (http://bit.ly/vvfDnf) that Daniel Schlienz fell ill Monday night
and died Tuesday. He says foul play is not suspected as there
were no signs of injuries, either self-inflicted or by someone else.The 42-year-old
Schlienz had been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree premeditated murder.The
criminal complaint says after Schlienz was convicted of criminal sexual conduct, he
retrieved a gun from his vehicle and shot Cook County Attorney Tim
Scannell and Grand Marais resident Gregory Thompson inside the Grand Marais (MUH-ray)
courthouse Dec. 15. Both were hospitalized for five days.
Ariz., Officer Brad Jones was shot in August after a fight with
a suspect being sought by a probation officer. And the two officers
in South Dakota, James McCandless and Nick Armstrong, were killed in August
after conducting what Rapid City authorities have said was a routine traffic
stop.The glimmer of good news in the report was the falling number
of traffic-related fatalities involving law enforcement officers, the lowest since 2005. Floyd
said revamped policies adopted by some departments on police chases and a
revived focus on road safety helped bring down the number of those
deaths."It's perhaps the most preventable death for law enforcement," he said. "Better
training and better awareness of the dangers of traffic safety will help

An Italian oil tanker was hijacked close to the coast of Oman
early Tuesday morning in an area where Somali pirates are known to
operate, AFP reported.The ship, which is owned by Marnavi, was reportedly carrying
18 people. The Italian navy was informed of the incident and the
company has been in touch with the foreign ministry, the report said.There
were six Italians, five Ukrainians and seven Indians onboard when the ship
came under attack in the early hours of Tuesday morning.The ship was
carrying a cargo of caustic soda to the Mediterranean.On Dec. 21, another
Italian oil tanker was freed after being in pirate captivity for more
than 10 months after a ransom was paid, the report said.Ransoms for
tankers often reach into the millions of dollars. The long coastline of
war-ravaged Somalia provides a perfect haven for pirate gangs preying on shipping
