aid the charge could only be misinterpreted by those "desperately" trying to
change the topic.Suggesting he may have spoken "inartfully" last week, Christie then
called Gusciora a "numbnuts" for trying to compare him to segregationist-era Alabama
Gov. George Wallace and Georgia Gov. Lester Maddox."What I said was I'm
sure that civil rights advocates would like to have had this as
another option but it was not available to them and the reason
it wasn't -- although I didn't say this -- was because the
political climate wasn't advantageous to even consider doing this," Christie told NJ.com
and other reporters who attended the Statehouse briefing."Yet you have numbnuts like
Reed Gusciora, who put out a statement, you know, comparing me to
George Wallace and Lester Maddox. Now, you know, come on guys at
some point you have got to be able to call BS on
those kinds of press releases. There are any number of you in
this room who may have quarrels with my policies, bu
a long time," Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said Tuesday on
Capitol Hill. And the U.S. apparently has had a tough time connecting with
Russia. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Tuesday that Clinton has tried
to reach Lavrov, but he hasn't called back."There's nothing more substantial and
more pressing in international affairs right now than the situation in Syria,"
Toner said. Some say the Obama administration should force Russia to choose between
Assad and the Syrian people -- by forcing Moscow to either veto
the resolution or not."If you don't have a vote, you signal to
the Arab world and to the Syrians in particular, that the U.N.,
the international community and, more importantly, the United States doesn't care about
the opposition in the street," said Richard Grenell, former U.S. spokesman at
the United Nations under the George W. Bush administration."It's time for Moscow
to understand that not even the Russian winter can freeze Sy
fight to the Obama administration ... to me it's political suicide."Catholic voters
played a pivotal role in Obama election in 2008 and could be
important again in November. Based on Fox News exit polling data, Catholics
made up 27 percent of the electorate three years ago, which translates
into an estimated 35 million voters.Obama won 54 percent of the Catholic
vote in 2008, a nine-point edge over Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain,
and White House officials are downplaying any political fallout now."We understand that
not everyone agrees with it," Carney said of the decision. "All I
can tell you is it was made after very careful consideration based
on the need to balance ... (religious rights and) the necessity to
provide access to preventive services for women was an important consideration."

<font style="color: #FCFCFC">ReutersJanuary 30, 2012: Taliban militants hand over their weapons after joining the
Afghan government's reconciliation and reintegration program, in Heart.LONDON A highly-classified U.S.
report that said the Taliban, backed by Pakistan, is ready to take
control in Afghanistan was not an analysis of the military campaign's progress,
a NATO spokesman said Wednesday. The document, leaked to The London Times, "may
provide some level of representative sampling of Taliban opinions and ideals but
clearly should not be used as any interpretation of campaign progress," Lieutenant
Colonel Jimmie Cummings told AFP.The "State of the Taliban" report, compiled by
U.S. forces operating out of Afghanistan's Bagram Air Field, suggested that the
10-year Western-led intervention in the country will not stop the Taliban from
returning to power."Though the Taliban suffered severely in 2011, its strength, motivation,
funding and tactical proficiency remains intact," the report said.
Mitt Romney heads into the next phase of the Republican presidential nominating
contest carrying a big win under his belt, after reasserting his frontrunner
status with a crushing victory over Newt Gingrich in Florida. However, Romney and
the rest of the Republican candidates will have to fine-tune their approach
as they enter the bevy of contests scattered all across the country
in February, starting in Nevada this Saturday. There are no historically decisive primaries
on the horizon, no big-ticket behemoths that are considered make-or-break for a
primary candidate. Instead, the candidates face what could be a drawn-out race
for delegates, one that will force the campaigns to make more strategic
decisions about where and when to allocate resources.Gingrich vowed to execute such
a campaign at his Florida rally Tuesday night, projecting a six-month battle
in what he described as a two-person race between him and the
Massachusetts moderate.As supporters waved signs
New York Police DepartmentJanuary 31, 2012: Scene of raid on Bronx building
that contained 600 marijuana plants.NEW YORK Cops raided a New York
apartment building Tuesday and found it had been turned into a pot
farm.Acting on a tip, police broke down the door at 610 Morris
Park Avenue in The Bronx at 1:00 p.m. local time and discovered
a staggering 600 marijuana-growing pots. They filled the top four floors of
the five-story building.Officials estimated there was 1,500 pounds of pot growing in
the building, and at $5,000 a pound, it had a street value
of about $7.5 million.Cops also found there had modifications to the ventilation
of the building and other changes."It was like a pot farm in
there," one law enforcement source said. "They were using enough electricity, grow
lights and such to power an entire city block."Three suspects in their
20s were arrested on drug dealing and drug possession charges.Click for more
