k a bit. Many young people have
enrolled in community colleges and universities. That's one reason a record
63 percent of adults ages 25 to 29 have spent at least
some time in college, according to the Pew Research Center.Older Americans
are returning to school, too. Doug Damato, who lives in Asheville, N.C.,
lost his job as an installer at a utility company in February
2012. He stopped looking for work last fall, when he began taking
classes in mechanical engineering at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community
College.Next week, Damato, 40, will accept an academic award for earning
top grades. But one obstacle has emerged: Under a recent change in
state law, his unemployment benefits will now end July 1, six months
earlier than he expected. He's planning to work nights, if possible, to support
himself once the benefits run out. Dropping out of school is "out
of the question," he said, given the time he has already put
into the program."I don't want a handout," he says. "I'm trying to
better myself."Many older Americans who lost their jobs are finding refuge
in Social Security's disability program. Nearly 8.9 million Americans are
receiving disability checks, up 1.3 million from when the recession ended
in June 2009.Natasha Baebler's journey out of the labor force and onto
the disability rolls began when she lost her job serving disabled students
and staff members at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., in February
2012.For six mon
KINGSTON, Jamaica Two Canadians and two Americans attempting a trans-Atlantic
expedition have been rescued after a rogue wave apparently capsized their
boat after 73 days at sea.The U.S. Coast Guard said Sunday that
the four rowers were rescued from waters some 400 miles (645 kilometers)
north of Puerto Rico. The group includes Adam Kreek, a Canadian Olympic rowing
gold medalist. They were attempting to row between Senegal and Miami. The
men took to a life raft Saturday after their ocean rowboat "James
Robert Hanssen" overturned and could not be righted. They donned life jackets
and set off a personal locator beacon.Guard crews located the men some
five hours after getting a distress signal and a cargo ship later
picked up the rowers. They are being transported to Puerto Rico.

said Sunday. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity, citing office
policy. The top U.S. military commander in South Korea, Gen. James Thurman,
will not make a planned trip to Washington this week to testify
before Congress because of tensions with North Korea. In an email Sunday
to The Associated Press, Army Col. Amy Hannah said Thurman would remain
in Seoul as "a prudent measure." He was scheduled to testify on
Tuesday and Wednesday. The U.S. Defense Department has delayed an intercontinental

concerns the launch could be misinterpreted and exacerbate the Korean crisis,
a senior defense official told The Associated Press.Defense Secretary Chuck

was not authorized to speak publicly about the test delay and requested

ROME A corner of a big Rome piazza, known for hosting
free rock concerts and political rallies, will be renamed after late pontiff
John Paul II, with Pope Francis coming to the unveiling ceremony Sunday. While
Francis instantly proved to be a crowd pleaser about 100,000 people
turned out in St. Peter's Square Sunday and a nearby street for
his noon blessing the mention of the widely beloved John Paul
still prompts affectionate cheers. When Francis noted that John Paul "closed
his eyes to this world" exactly eight years ago this month, in
2005, the new pope drew so much applause, he couldn't finish his
sentence as he spoke from the papal studio window overlooking St. Peter's
Square.Francis invited people to join him later in Rome's main church, St.
John in Lateran Basilica. Pontiffs are also the bishop of Rome, and
a traditional installation ceremony at the basilica formally recognizes
that Francis is Rome's bishop as well as the leader of the
worldwide Roman Catholic church. Before entering the basilica, Francis was
scheduled to attend the unveiling of a plaque on a corner of
the square near the church, naming that part of the piazza after
John Paul. The late pontiff enthusiastically embraced his role as Rome's
bishop, visiting hundreds of city parishes on Sunday mornings.Francis might
be the pope who decides whether another miracle has been attributed to
John Paul's intercession, which would enable the late, Polish-born pontiff
