POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. Police have arrested a man they say killed a
99-year-old woman inside her upstate New York home.Poughkeepsie (poh-KIHP'-see)
City Police say 20-year-old Javon Tyrek Rogers was arraigned Saturday, charged
with burglary and first-degree murder in the death of Fannie Gumbinger.
They say he was arrested at 11 p.m. Friday night.Gumbinger's body was
found Wednesday morning after a caretaker suspected something was wrong
inside the woman's house and called police. An autopsy Thursday determined
that Gumbinger died from multiple injuries inside the home she'd lived alone
in since her husband's death in 2007.Police tell the Poughkeepsie Journal
(http://pojonews.co/17TPb4A ) Rogers is suspected in other recent burglaries
in the city.Rogers was being held without bail Saturday and unavailable
for comment.___Information from: Poughkeepsie Journal, http://www.poughkeepsiejournal.com
ve Boone and other past mascots
a retirement ceremony in the upcoming academic year. The image of Denver
Boone was originally designed by a Walt Disney artist and named by
a UD student back in 1968 .The cartoony figure, which sports a
scruffy beard and a raccoon skin cap, is reminiscent of the Daniel
Boone character from the 1950s TV show based on the real-life pioneer.Boone
was a legend of early American history and the archetypal hero of
the American Western Frontier.Later, his image and legend fell victim to
revisionist history as he became associated with the forceful displacement
of Native Americans from their land.So how closely linked are Denver Boone
and Daniel Boone?Any association of the Denver Boone caricature with America's
pioneer hero, Daniel Boone, is misguided, said Randell Jones, historian
and author of the book In the Footsteps of Daniel Boone.Mythology and
Fess Parker aside, it is well documented that Daniel Boone never wore
a coonskin cap. Neither did he wear a beard. Moreover, any exploits
by him west of Missouri are speculative at best.

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">JERUSALEM Prominent Israeli Cabinet ministers are calling for a U.S.-led
response to an alleged chemical attack in Syria last week that the
prime minister describes as a "terrible crime."Benjamin Netanyahu told his
Cabinet Sunday that "this situation cannot continue." Justice Minister Tzipi
Livni told Israel Radio that a U.S. response to the alleged poison
gas attack would help discourage future chemical weapons use, but also have
security implications for Israel.Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz told
Army Radio the attack requires a response. He said the chances that
Syria would attack Israel as a result of U.S. action were slim
but that the army should be prepared for such an eventuality.Neither Netanyahu
nor the ministers specified what type of response they were urging. The
U.S. is considering military options.
 atives gained access to
the family's property in Groveland, just 26 miles from the park's entrance,
on Saturday and was able to confirm their vacation cabin had burned
to the ground. The family saw firefighters on a TV news report a
day earlier defending the cabin."It's just mind-blowing the way the fire
swept through and destroyed it so quickly," said Sanderson, who's been monitoring
the fire from her home near Tampa Bay, Fla. "The only thing
left standing is our barbeque pit."The Rim Fire has burned nearly 200
square miles -- an area about the size of Chicago. It started
in a remote canyon of the Stanislaus National Forest Aug. 17 and
is just 5 percent contained. Its cause was under investigation. The fire
has grown so large and is burning dry timber and brush with
such ferocity that it has created its own weather pattern, making it
difficult to predict in which direction it will move."As the smoke column
builds up it breaks down and collapses inside of itself, sending downdrafts
and gusts that can go in any direction," said Daniel Berlant, a
spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
"There's a lot of potential for this one to continue to grow."The
tourist mecca of Yosemite Valley, the part of the park known around
the world for such sights as the Half Dome and El Capitan
rock formations and waterfalls, remained open, clear of smoke and free from
other signs of the fire that remained about 20 miles away.
