PITTSBURGH An unidentified city police sergeant is facing possible discipline
for having his picture taken in uniform while wearing a unicorn mask
and standing next to a porn star who had just been thrown
out of a Pittsburgh Pirates game for dancing in the costume head. But
the woman who took the picture, an adult film producer named Steviee
Hughes, said she's not sure what the fuss is all about, though
she's assuming it has more to do with adult entertainer Andy San
Dimas posing next to the officer than it does the oversized animal
head he wore on July 13.Calling it a "mountain made out of
mole hill," Hughes said, "I'm sure if she wouldn't have been a
porn star, it would have been OK."City public safety officials said Dimas
was in town last Saturday to dance at a local night club
but went to the Pirates game first and was ejected by security
for refusing to sit down after she was seen dancing while wearing
the large unicorn head. When Dimas was taken to a security office at
PNC Park, the sergeant and others were standing around and Hughes said
he agreed to wear the unicorn head and pose for a picture,
which Hughes then posted on Twitter. That's when the tweet hit the fan.Gossipy
news blogs Deadspin and TMZ posted the photo as well as cellphone
video Hughes shot of Dimas dancing in the unicorn head just before
she was ejected. Rumors spread that the dancer was high on drugs
or part of a sexual cult fixated on unicorns.Hughes said the tr
ast thousands of devotees in
an open-topped vehicle, a plan that would put the thousands of police
and soldiers dispatched to protect the pope on high alert and require
more plainclothes security.Brazil's justice and defense ministers, along
with a top army commander, urged the pope to use an armored
popemobile instead, but the Vatican has responded that Francis likes to
jump in and out of his vehicle to greet the faithful, which
wouldn't be possible in the more protected vehicle."The bulletproofing would
lessen our worries, it'd be better if he had it," said Gen.
Jose Abreu, the top officer overseeing the military's role in the security
scheme. "It's a personal choice and we'll respect it, but it's not
remotely pleasant for security forces."On the top of everyone's minds are
the massive and sometimes violent anti-government protests that swept this
continent-sized country last month. They've continued, albeit with fewer
people, less than a week before Francis' arrival Monday.Last week, a small
protest in Leblon, one of Rio's poshest neighborhoods, erupted into looting
and destruction, with demonstrators smashing storefronts, defacing street
signs and setting piles of garbage on fire.A handful of protests are
planned. If violence breaks out near the pope, the world may once
again see images of demonstrators enveloped by clouds of tear gas, stun
grenades ricocheting off stately buildings and rubber bullets whizzing through
the air.Jose

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">atshirt was a black teenager and angry at being followed then
a long history of stereotypes of young black males as criminals kicks
in for Americans. And it is folly to pretend that if the situation
had been reversed and a black stranger was following Zimmerman that he
would not have been fearful.Again, the media, like the prosecution, and
like the jury all failed to exercise the honesty required to
act wisely. All together the prosecution, media and jury failed to offer
any justice to the mother of a murdered, unarmed 17-year-old who was
not involved in any crime and not threatening anyone. The young man
was followed as he was walking home, confronted by a stranger with
a gun and then killed.Whether the young man threw a punch or
a rock it is hard to see any wisdom in allowing a
killer to walk away because he feared for his safety after scaring
the victim. But one juror, identified by her jury service number as B37,
said in a post-trial interview that Martin has some responsibility for his
death because when George confronted him he could have walked away.It is
also true that George could have avoided the whole incident by staying
in his car.The juror, the wife of a lawyer, allowed that Zimmerman
went too far and did not use good judgment. She also said
the laws were very confusing. And then she concluded idly that someone
lost their life and nothing else could be done about it.Four of
the five other jurors issued a statement disavowin
NASA/Swift Science Team/Stefan ImmlerPerhaps our human senses are deceiving
us maybe existence is an illusion, and reality isn't real. The idea that
everything we know is merely a construction of our minds was investigated
in the latest episode of the Science Channel program "Through the Wormhole,"
hosted by Morgan Freeman, which premiered July 17."What is real?" Freeman
asks in the show. "How can we be certain that the universe
around us actually exists? And how can we know that the world
we see matches what anyone else experiences?"Human senses are fallible.
What people think they perceive is actually filtered and processed by the
brain to construct a useful view of the world. Normally, this filtering
is helpful, allowing people to sort out important information from the barrage
of data that comes in every minute from their environment. But this filtering
ability can become a weakness, as it often does when we're watching
a magician."A good magician will tap into universal brain processes that
underlie perception," said Lawrence Rosenblum, a psychologist at the University
of California, Riverside and a magician himself. For instance, a magician
often directs the audience's gaze to one hand while he does something
with the other.- Physicist Steven Nahn of MITBut Rosenblum doesn't see the
human tendency to fall for such misdirection as evidence that all of
reality exists only in our minds. "Our perceptual system can be fooled,
but I do no
