IDYLLWILD, Calif. Firefighters in Southern California aided by heavy rain
in the mountains above Palm Springs were starting to turn the tide
Sunday on a stubborn wildfire that has burned across more than 40
square miles, destroyed a handful of homes and forced the evacuation of
thousands of people. An inch and a half of rain was measured Sunday
morning at the aerial tramway near Palm Springs, with more rainfall expected
throughout the day. The moisture helped slow the fire's progress."With diminished
fire activity, firefighters made great progress with line construction,
particularly along the east side towards Palm Springs," said U.S. Forest
Service spokesman John Miller. With the blaze almost half contained, authorities
were able to lift evacuation orders for several communities. The fire was
still far from extinguished, however. The thunderstorm helping douse the
flames could also bring lightning, wind and flooding, said Miller, all hazardous
conditions for fire crews. The mountain wildfire began last Monday and has
burned across about 42 square miles. It has destroyed 23 structures, including
seven homes. The fire was less than two miles from Idyllwild on its
western flank. It was a similar distance from Palm Springs below on
the desert floor, where an enormous plume of smoke could be seen.Authorities
have said the fire was human-caused, but wouldn't say whether it was
accidental or intentional. There have been no reports of injuries.More
PITTSBURGH An unidentified city police sergeant is facing possible discipline
for having his picture taken in uniform while wearing a unicorn mask
and standing next to a porn star who had just been thrown
out of a Pittsburgh Pirates game for dancing in the costume head. But
the woman who took the picture, an adult film producer named Steviee
Hughes, said she's not sure what the fuss is all about, though
she's assuming it has more to do with adult entertainer Andy San
Dimas posing next to the officer than it does the oversized animal
head he wore on July 13.Calling it a "mountain made out of
mole hill," Hughes said, "I'm sure if she wouldn't have been a
porn star, it would have been OK."City public safety officials said Dimas
was in town last Saturday to dance at a local night club
but went to the Pirates game first and was ejected by security
for refusing to sit down after she was seen dancing while wearing
the large unicorn head. When Dimas was taken to a security office at
PNC Park, the sergeant and others were standing around and Hughes said
he agreed to wear the unicorn head and pose for a picture,
which Hughes then posted on Twitter. That's when the tweet hit the fan.Gossipy
news blogs Deadspin and TMZ posted the photo as well as cellphone
video Hughes shot of Dimas dancing in the unicorn head just before
she was ejected. Rumors spread that the dancer was high on drugs
or part of a sexual cult fixated on unicorns.Hughes said the tr

not, other efforts will continue.Indonesian conservationists have been trying
to mate Andalas, the oldest brother, with two other females there after
last year's success. His semen has also been banked, but there have
been no reported successful artificial inseminations yet.At the Singapore
summit, Indonesian and Malaysian authorities pledged to work together more
closely on species survival efforts. Conservationists say special rhino
protection patrols have thwarted poachers who kill rhinos to take horns
that can be worth tens of thousands of dollars on the black
market. The horns are sought for medicinal and other uses -- by
legend, rhino horns are said to have aphrodisiac powers. While the Sumatran
rhino isn't a particularly popular or even recognizable animal to the public
at large, Roth said, the species contributes to the global need for
healthy forests with its role in the ecosystem clearing small saplings and
brush, and helping spread seeds and make trails smaller animals use. Also,
the rhinos don't threaten humans nor damage their crops."There's no human-rhino
conflict," Roth said. "Are we going to put enough value in wildlife
to share the earth with this ancient, peaceful, noninvasive species? If
we let the Sumatran rhino die, what are we going to save?"

oil pipeline exploded in a rural area of central Mexico early Sunday,
igniting a huge blaze that injured seven people, authorities said.Petroleos
de Mexico, the state oil company, said on Twitter that the blast
was caused by an attempted theft of crude oil.Five policemen and two
firefighters were injured when they responded to the explosion and fire,
the state of Mexico's secretary for security said.Pemex said they got too
close to the blaze and were injured in a secondary explosion. Two patrol
cars were incinerated by the fire. The incident occurred in a corn field
near the municipality of Tonanitla, about 40 kilometers (24 miles) from
Mexico City."The fire in the oil pipeline in Tonanitla has been suppressed,"
Pemex said.In January, 37 people were killed at Pemex's Mexico City headquarters
when an accumulation of gas in its basement ignited.A Pemex gas distribution
plant in the northern city of Reynosa exploded in September 2012, killing
another 30 people.
