The gunman
in a shooting Friday at LAX was wounded and taken into custody
after prompting authorities to evacuate a terminal and stop flights headed

a gunman opened fire at Los Angeles International Airport as paramedics
waited 150 yards away because police had not declared the terminal safe
to enter, according to two law enforcement officials.It would be 33 minutes
before Transportation Security Administration Officer Gerardo Hernandez,
who was about 20 feet from an exit, would be wheeled out
by police to an ambulance, said the officials, who were briefed on
the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity because the probe
was still ongoing into the Nov. 1 shooting.For all but five of
those minutes, there was no threat from the suspected gunman -- he
had been shot and was in custody, they said.While it's not known
when Hernandez died or if immediate medical attention could have saved his
life, officials are examining what conversations took place between police
and fire commanders to determine when it was safe enough to enter
and whether paramedics could have gone into the terminal earlier, one of

limits most urban couples to one child and allows two children for
rural families if their first-born is a girl. It also allows two
children for parents who themselves are both singletons.The new policy will
allow two children for families where only one parent was an only
child.The Chinese government credits the one-child policy introduced in
1980 with preventing hundreds of millions of births and helping lift countless
families out of poverty. But the strict limits have led to forced
abortions and sterilizations, even though such measures are illegal. Couples
who flout the rules face hefty fines, seizure of their property and
loss of their jobs.Last year, a government think tank urged China's leaders
to start phasing out the policy and allow two children for every
family by 2015, saying the country had paid a "huge political and
social cost."The China Development Research Foundation said the policy had
resulted in social conflict, high administrative costs and led indirectly
to a long-term gender imbalance because of illegal abortions of female fetuses
and the infanticide of baby girls by parents who cling to a
traditional preference for a son.
YAOUNDE, Cameroon A church official in northern Cameroon says the gunmen
who kidnapped a French priest are demanding the release of members of
an armed Islamic group who have been arrested.Fellow priest Gilbert Pali
said Friday that the kidnappers had sent a representative back to the
area to issue their demands.Father Georges Vandenbeusch was kidnapped late
Wednesday in the far north of Cameroon, about 18 miles (30 kilometers)
from the border with Nigeria. The zone has been flagged as a
risk for terrorism and kidnapping, but the priest chose to stay on
to carry out his work, the French Foreign Ministry said.The kidnappers are
seeking the release of prisoners from Boko Haram, a Nigerian extremist group
that has waged a campaign of bombings and shootings across Nigeria's north.
