attack on the foreigners. Last week, the city ordered van operators
to remove from their windows the dark tinting that made it nearly
impossible to see what was going on inside.Three men aged 20-22, as
well as a minor, have been detained in connection with the attack.Brazilian
media reports have said two other women, both Brazilians, have since come
forward to say they were also raped by the same gang. One
of the women is said to have reported the rape to a
police unit specializing in crimes against women well before the attack
on the foreigners, but officers took little action to investigate the matter. The
head of the unit as well as another officer have since been
fired. The attacks have been a blow to Rio's image as the city
gears up to host next year's soccer World Cup and the 2016
Olympic games.Officials here have won praise in recent years for bringing
down crime in this once notoriously violent city, and residents here had
been basking in the city's most positive image in decades.
Married musicians Beyonce, left, and rapper Jay-Z, during an April 4, 2013
trip to Cuba, and President Obama.APYou generally don't want to get into
a rap rivalry with Jay-Z.But the White House on Thursday challenged the
mega-artist after he released a track suggesting he got "White House clearance"
for his controversial trip to Cuba with wife Beyonce.Jay Carney, President
Obama's press secretary, categorically denied the claim -- reiterating that
the Treasury Department handles clearance."I guess nothing rhymes with Treasury,"
Carney joked, before clarifying: "The White House, from the president on
down, had nothing to do with anybody's ... travel to Cuba. That
is something that Treasury handles."Jay-Z released the track Thursday shortly
after returning from Cuba, a trip that drew criticism from Cuban-American
lawmakers in Congress who questioned how the couple got permission to travel
to the communist-run island. The rapper boasted at length about the visit,
suggesting Obama was involved."I done turned Havana into Atlanta," he rapped.
"Boy from the hood, but got White House clearance."He continued: "Politicians
never did s--- for me except lie to me, distort history, wanna
give me jail time and a fine. Fine, let me commit a
real crime. ... Obama said, 'Chill you gonna get me impeached.' You
don't need this s--- anyway, chill with me on the beach.'"The track
resulted in a bizarre scene at Thursday's White House briefing, as a

Analysts are expecting Home Depot to report a second-quarter profit of 61
cents a share on Tuesday, compared with 77 cents a year earlier,
according to Reuters Estimates. The industry leader has said per-share earnings
could fall as much as 24 percent this year. REUTERS/Shannon
Stapleton (UNITED STATES)ReutersA man in a suburban Los Angeles Home Depot
Wednesday evening used saws normally used to slice sheet rock to cut
both his arms down to the bone in front of several horrified
customers, police said. The man, who was not immediately identified, suffered
severe injuries. He was found in a pool of blood in the
store's tool section. He had a slight pulse but was passing out
as help arrived."People just couldn't believe it," Cpl. Rudy Lopez, with
West Covina Police Department, told KNBC-TV. "He walked into the saw area,
picked up a couple of saws in the saw area and started
cutting both of his arms."An off-duty paramedic from the Pasadena Fire Department
had been shopping nearby and hurried to the scene.- Cpl. Rudy Lopez,
with West Covina Police Department"The officers had already found the man
down, face down, blood all over the store, multiple aisles, and the
whole store is in chaos," the paramedic, Art Hurtado, told KNBC-TV.Hurtado
thought the man was dead but when he checked he found breath
and a slight pulse and said he thought to himself, "I can
save this guy."With help fro

restrictions were paramount following the shooting deaths in December of
20 children and six educators at an elementary school in Newtown."On this
particular issue he's been clear: We need to prioritize public safety and
this bill will improve public safety," he said. The law adds more than
100 firearms to the state's assault weapons ban and creates what officials
have called the nation's first dangerous weapon offender registry and eligibility
rules for buying ammunition.Malkowski said he's received many emails from
customers "fed up with Connecticut.""They urged us to pick up and leave,"
he said.Malkowski said he spoke Tuesday with Texas economic development
officials trying to lure the company, which was founded in 2003 and
employs more than 200 employees."It's something we'll strongly consider,"
he said, adding that leaving Connecticut would be difficult. "If you're
a lawyer with a laptop, that's one thing," he said. "It's not
something we're going to do easily."Jonathan Scalise, owner of Ammunition
Storage Components, also of New Britain, said he's received offers from
