A leading Republican said Friday that the unfolding events in Boston underscore
the need to address "gaps and loopholes" in the nation's immigration system,
stressing that any new immigration bill should tighten screening to stop
those "who wish to do us harm."Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, addressed the
terror attack and ongoing manhunt at the start of a Capitol Hill
hearing on newly unveiled comprehensive immigration legislation. The Boston
crisis rapidly overshadowed the hearing, the first held for the major piece
of legislation. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano had been scheduled
to testify but canceled as federal law enforcement agencies were pulled
into the crime scene. Grassley, though, suggested the attacks in Boston
could influence how the immigration bill is considered."It's important for
us to understand the gaps and loopholes in our immigration system. While
we don't yet know the immigration status of the people who have
terrorized the communities in Massachusetts, when we find out, it will help
shed light on the weaknesses of our system," said Grassley, the top
Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee. The two suspects have been
identified as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, and his brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev,
26, who was killed early Friday morning. The two are believed to be
from the region near Chechnya. One source briefed on the matter said
they are thought to have arrived in the United States about a
decade ago. Po
ev told The Associated Press.
"Dzhokhar is a second-year medical student in the U.S. He is such
an intelligent boy. We expected him to come on holidays here."Anzor Tsarnaev,
who characterized his younger son as an intelligent and accomplished young
man, told ABC News that he spoke to his sons by phone
earlier this week. He said his sons reassured him, saying, "Everything is
good, Daddy. Everything is very good.""Give up. Give up. You have a
bright future ahead of you, Anzor Tsarneav said, according to ABC News.
Come home to Russia. He continued: "If they killed him, then all hell
would break loose."

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">Initial tests have come back negative for poisonous substance following
a suspicious white powder found Thursday morning in the mailroom of the
Naval Support facility in Arlington, Va.About 800 people were evacuated
after the powdery substance was found in the mailroom of Building No.
12 at the support facility, the Navy said in a statement. All
have since been let back in, Fox News has learned.Building 12 houses
the mailroom and the offices of the chief of naval personnel, according
to the official, who said the evacuations were a precautionary measure.
The Arlington County Fire Department and hazardous-materials officials,
as well as Navy personnel, are on the scene investigating. The incident comes
just days after letters that tested positive for the poison ricin were
mailed to President Obama and Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss, in Washington.
The FBI arrested Mississippi resident Paul Kevin Curtis in connection with
the letters Wednesday night, an FBI release said. Curtis is scheduled to
appear in federal court Thursday and, if convicted, could face more than
a decade behind bars.Fox News' Justin Fishel contributed to this report.
tion has been made, so far there
is no evidence to support the view that the brothers were acting
on behalf of the Chechen cause -- but the motivation for their
actions remains wide open.Fox News is told investigators will be looking
for computer traffic to the Al Qaeda web magazine Inspire which provides
a how-to guide to build pressure cooker bombs -- which were used
in the Boston Marathon attack.Fox News is told that investigators are eager
to execute warrants at the residences and to review the brothers' computers
but this is being approached with extreme caution given the potential, after
this week's successful explosions, to leave booby traps. While authorities
are following the paper trail, the Capitol Hill source said the consensus
in the intelligence community is that it's "really important that we try
to take this guy alive" so he can be questioned. The goal
is to find out whether more are involved."We would really prefer to
have that intel," the source said. The source said officials know the two
suspects are Muslim, but don't know if they attended a mosque in
the area -- and are looking closely at that possibility.Fox News' Catherine
Herridge and Bret Baier contributed to this report.
