Aug 20, 2013: City Church of Tallahassee Pastor Dean Inserra stands outside
his church in Tallahassee, Fla.APNASHVILLE, Tenn. Worried they could be
sued by gay couples, some churches are changing their bylaws to reflect
their view that the Bible allows only marriage between one man and
one woman.Although there have been suits against wedding industry businesses
that refuse to serve gay couples, attorneys promoting the bylaw changes
say they don't know of any lawsuits against churches.Critics say the changes
are unnecessary, but some churches fear that it's only a matter of
time before one of them is sued."I thought marriage was always between
one man and one woman, but the Supreme Court in a 5-4
decision said no," said Gregory S. Erwin, an attorney for the Louisiana
Baptist Convention, an association of Southern Baptist churches and one
several groups advising churches to change their bylaws. "I think it's better
to be prepared because the law is changing. America is changing."In a
June decision, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a provision of the
federal Defense of Marriage Act that defined marriage as between a man
and a woman for purposes of federal law. A second decision was
more technical but essentially ushered in legal gay marriage in California.Kevin
Snider is an attorney with the Pacific Justice Institute, a nonprofit legal
defense group that specializes in conservative Christian issues. His organization
released a model mar
ench villa, worth millions, and set up a chain of associates through
which government funds could be embezzled discreetly."It was the first time
such a high-ranking family has put down the operation step by step,"
Ding said. "This case has taught us so much about the dynamics
and mechanisms in most Chinese corruption cases."Testimony also revealed
how one of the foreigners, Neil Heywood, demanded more money by threatening
the safety of Bo's son and to expose the family. Gu later
killed him and received a suspended death sentence for the murder. The court
also heard evidence over the weekend about the events surrounding the attempted
U.S. defection bid by Wang, the police chief, in February 2012, an
incident that blew the scandal into the open. Wang said he fled
to an American consulate fearing for his safety after he told Bo
that the politician's wife had murdered a British associate.Bo told the
court that he reacted angrily to Wang's report, slapping him in the
face and smashing a cup in fury because he initially thought Wang
was framing his wife for the crime. "I thought he was being
duplicitous. I have zero tolerance for duplicity," Bo said. "I slapped him
in the face."Wang, who testified Saturday, said the violent confrontation
with Bo, his subsequent removal as police chief and the disappearance of
his subordinates who were investigating the murder spurred him to flee to
American officials for safety. He said Bo did not slap him as

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">TEHRAN, Iran Iran is welcoming the leader of neighboring Oman in
the first visit by a foreign ruler to the country since centrist
Iranian President Hasan Rouhani took office on Aug. 3.Oman has in the
past played a mediating role to help release Iranian and American nationals
from both countries' prisons. Omani Sultan Qaboos' current visit has raised
speculation in Iranian newspapers that Oman could once again play such a
role to help ease tensions between Iran and U.S. and European powers
over Iran's nuclear program.Qaboos is in Tehran for a three-day visit on
bilateral and international affairs. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad
Zarif only told reporters his country was ready to discuss "various issues"
with the sultan.
JERUSALEM Prominent Israeli Cabinet ministers are calling for a U.S.-led
response to an alleged chemical attack in Syria last week that the
prime minister describes as a "terrible crime."Benjamin Netanyahu told his
Cabinet Sunday that "this situation cannot continue." Justice Minister Tzipi
Livni told Israel Radio that a U.S. response to the alleged poison
gas attack would help discourage future chemical weapons use, but also have
security implications for Israel.Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz told
Army Radio the attack requires a response. He said the chances that
Syria would attack Israel as a result of U.S. action were slim
but that the army should be prepared for such an eventuality.Neither Netanyahu
nor the ministers specified what type of response they were urging. The
U.S. is considering military options.
