Fire burns near Yosemite National Park, Calif. (AP Photo)Firefighters in
California braced for another rough day Sunday in their efforts to gain
ground on a wildfire that has burned its way into Yosemite National
Park.Strong winds, some of which could reach speeds of between 30 and
40 miles per hour, could push the raging fire further into the
northwest edge of the park, threatening thousands of rural homes. More than
5,500 homes are already threatened and at least four have been destroyed.Meanwhile,
park officials are clearing brush and setting sprinklers to protect two
groves of giant sequoias. The iconic trees can resist fire, but dry
conditions and heavy brush are forcing extra precautions to be taken in
the Tuolumne and Merced groves. About three dozen of the giant trees
are affected."All of the plants and trees in Yosemite are important, but
the giant sequoias are incredibly important both for what they are and
as symbols of the National Park System," park spokesman Scott Gediman told
the Associated Press Saturday. The trees grow naturally only on the western
slopes of the Sierra Nevada and are among the largest and oldest
living things on earth. The Tuolumne and Merced groves are in the north
end of the park near Crane Flat. While the Rim Fire is
still some distance away, park employees and trail crews are not taking
any chances.Jessica Sanderson said one of her rel

about the size of Chicago and was just 7
percent contained late Saturday night. It started in a remote canyon of
the Stanislaus National Forest Aug. 17 and grew rapidly under dry conditions. The
fire has grown so large and is burning dry timber and brush
with such ferocity that it has created its own weather pattern, making
it difficult to predict in which direction it will move. Steep, inaccessible
terrain was hampering firefighter's effort to surround it.With

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">JINAN, China Fallen Chinese politician Bo Xilai assailed his wife and
his former right-hand man in four days of testimony ending Sunday, rejecting
accusations of corruption and shielding a murderer in a trial that gave
a glimpse into the shady inner workings of China's elite.A court heard
allegations over the weekend that Bo abused his power as the Communist
Party secretary of the southern megacity of Chongqing to block an investigation
into his wife's murder of a British businessman, as well as to
hide his aide's embarrassing flight to a U.S. consulate.Bo told the Jinan
Intermediate People's Court on Sunday, the fourth day of the trial, that
his former right-hand man, Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun, "constantly
lied in his testimony." He said Wang was "a person of very
vile quality, who lied in court and muddied the waters."Bo acknowledged
that he made mistakes in the handling of the incidents that triggered
the nation's biggest political scandal in decades and brought shame on the
Communist Party, but denied criminal misconduct. After testimony concluded
Sunday, the court said all evidence in the trial had been presented.
The trial was adjourned until Monday, when closing arguments are expected
to be presented. The Communist Party is using the trial to cement Bo's
downfall and wrap up a scandal that hangs over the party's recently
installed new leadership as it tries to cement its authority and fully
focus on tackling serious econom
Investigators in a small Florida town were working Sunday to determine what
led a 72-year-old former employee of a trucking company to go on
a shooting spree Saturday, attacking former co-workers and his ex-boss,
killing two and wounding two more before killing himself.Authorities say
Hubert Allen Jr. drove to several locations around Union County, including
the headquarters for Pritchett Trucking Inc. and shot the men Saturday.
Investigators believe Allen acted alone.According to a Union County Sheriff's
Office news release, Allen shot and killed former co-worker Rolando Gonzalez-Delgado,
28, around 9 a.m. Saturday, then went a short distance and fatally
shot his former employer, 80-year-old Marvin Pritchett.A few minutes later,
he pulled over where another former co-worker was driving a farm tractor,
exchanged words with him and then fired one shot from a shotgun,
authorities said. That victim, 66-year-old Lewis Mabrey Jr., was in good
condition as he was preparing to undergo surgery for a broken arm
and other injuries, according to officials. Not long after that, Allen went
to the company's headquarters in Lake Butler and shot 44-year-old David
Griffis in the stomach, the release said. Griffis was in critical condition.
Authorities said Allen then returned to his nearby home and killed himself. With
a population of about 2,000, Lake Butler is located about an hour's
drive southwest of Jacksonville.Investigators were working at the five s
