ts offered an amendment that declared climate
change to be caused by humans. The amendment said: "Congress accepts the
scientific findings of the Environmental Protection Agency that climate
changes is occurring, is caused largely by human activities, and poses significant
risks for public health and welfare."That amendment failed, on a 184-240
vote -- which is where the 240 number came from in the
OFA ad.But three of those no votes were Democrats. And not all
of the Republicans who voted against the amendment are on record saying
climate change is a sham. Republicans, rather, complained at the time that
the amendment was not pertinent to the underlying bill.So where does the
word "hoax" come from? There appear to be a couple instances. One, according
to the Post, was from a Democrat, Rep. Henry Waxman, who said
at the time that the Republican bill's premise was "that climate change
is a hoax."The other was a quote from Republican Georgia Rep. Paul
Broun, nestled into the Obama group's video right after the vote factoid.
Broun said: "The idea of human-induced global climate change is one of
the greatest hoaxes perpetrated out of the scientific community. It is a
hoax."But as FactCheck.org pointed out, that quote was from 2009, two years
earlier.FactCheck.org also said that Broun and other Republicans who completely
deny a link to human activity are "off base." But the group
noted there is a diversity of opinion among the GOP caucus on
t
is family.Friday is Ricardo Portillo's youngest daughter's
16th birthday, and the family was planning to leave on vacation Thursday,
Johana Portillo said. Instead, they have set up a bank fund in
case their father dies."If my dad doesn't make it, we want to
make his last wish come true," Johana Portillo said. "To see his
family again."She said his sisters are trying to come from Guadalajara,
Mexico. The referee hadn't seen his sisters in the 16 years since
he moved to Utah."It's just not fair," said Johana Portillo, holding back
tears. "This person caused us a lot of pain. I want justice
for my dad, and we're going to get it. ... If he
spends time in jail forever, it's not enough. They are not going
to bring my daddy back."

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">Hiring picked up in April after a slow couple months, as employers
added 165,000 jobs and the unemployment rate dipped to a four-year low
of 7.5 percent. The Labor Department report showed positive signs though
the economic recovery remains shaky. A mix of government spending cuts and
tax hikes has threatened to curb economic growth, which is already slow
in a post-recession environment. The jobless rate dipped only slightly, from
7.6 percent to 7.5 percent. The government also revised up its estimate
of job gains in February and March by a combined 114,000. It
now says employers added 332,000 jobs in February and 138,000 in March.Stock
prices soared on the heels of the report, with the Dow surging
past 15,000 for the first time ever an hour after trading began. The
economy has created an average of 208,000 jobs a month from November
through April. That's above the 138,000 added in the previous six months. The
only sectors of the economy that cut jobs last month were construction
and governmentEconomic figures in recent days have been mixed. The government
said Thursday that the number of Americans applying for unemployment aid
fell last week to a seasonally adjusted 324,000 -- the fewest since
January 2008.At the same time, surveys have shown that hiring by private
companies was weak and that manufacturing activity declined in April. And
exports fell in March. The economy grew in the January-March quarter at an
annual pace of 2.5 percent, m
 ins,
based on police records.West Fertilizer did not have a fence or security
guards, and just one security camera was installed, Cawthon said. Besides
the costs of adding security, the plant was often visited after hours
by farmers needing fertilizer."If the owner was to spend that money to
make this a fortress, it would decrease his business because the farmers
can't come and go," Cawthon said.Daniel Keeney, a spokesman for Adair Grain,
which owned and operated the plant, declined to answer questions about plant
security to avoid "misunderstandings or confusions."Last month's explosion
occurred during the spring planting season, when the plant was especially
busy, officials in the investigation have said. Two months before the explosion,
plant officials reported they could store as much as 270 tons of
ammonium nitrate.Teams from the state fire marshal's office and the U.S.
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are hoping to determine
how much ammonium nitrate was on site when the blast occurred by
studying the 90-foot-crater left in the explosion and combing through records.
