EL-ARISH, Egypt Armed Bedouin tribesmen briefly abducted a Hungarian member
of the multinational observer force in Sinai, releasing him around two hours
later after tribal elders intervened, a security official said Thursday.An
official with the force confirmed the kidnapping of the Hungarian who was
traveling Thursday in a bus from el-Arish in north Sinai to Cairo,
a regular trip members of the force make to the capital.The two
officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized
to speak to the media.The security official said the elders secured the
release of the force member by mediating between the tribesman and the
government. The kidnappers were demanding the release of a member of their
tribe arrested earlier on drug-related charges. The official said authorities
promised they would review the case of the arrested tribesman, but that
they have not released him.It is rare that members of the 12-nation
force stationed in the Sinai are abducted by local tribesmen, although they
have attacked the force's buses and headquarters. The largest contingent
in the Sinai force is American.Bedouin tribesmen often briefly hold tourists
to pressure the government in negotiations over the release of imprisoned
relatives.The clans in Sinai have long complained of discrimination by the
state, and mass arrests in the area after bombings in 2004 and
2005 only further poisoned relations between residents and authorities.

on it," Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky.; Ted Cruz, R-Texas; and Mike Lee,
R-Utah, said in a statement. "The American people expect more and deserve
better."Thursday's vote follows an intense week of lobbying by gun control

Lulz Security, whose campaign of online havoc drew worldwide attention back
in 2011, received thousands of dollars' worth of bitcoins after promising
followers that the money would go toward launching attacks against the FBI.A
report apparently drawn up by the bureau and leaked to the Internet
last year said that "since Bitcoin does not have a centralized authority,
detecting suspicious activity, identifying users and obtaining transaction
records is problematic for law enforcement."It went on to warn that bitcoins
might become "an increasingly useful tool for various illegal activities
beyond the cyber realm" -- including child pornography, trafficking and
terrorism.The FBI did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.Late
last month, the U.S. Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, or
FinCen, announced it was extending its money-laundering rules to U.S. bitcoin
dealers and transfer services, meaning that companies that trade in the
cybercurrency would have to keep more detailed records and report high-value
transactions.Many in the Bitcoin community are frustrated at the attention
paid to the shadier side of the virtual economy.Atlanta-based entrepreneur
Anthony Gallippi said the focus on drugs and hacking misses the "much
bigger e-commerce use for this that's growing and that's growing rapidly."Very
few businesses set their prices in bitcoins -- the currency
ommitted to dealing with
the gang problem that is tormenting honest people in his hometown as
he is to blaming law-abiding gun owners for the acts of psychopathic
murderers."House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, repeated his view that the
Senate should act, saying, "It's one thing for two members to come
to some agreement. It doesn't substitute the will for the other 98
members."In a written statement, Obama said he'd prefer stronger language
than the compromise, but he said it represented progress."It recognizes
that there are good people on both sides of this issue, and
we don't have to agree on everything to know that we've got
to do something to stem the tide of gun violence," he said.Other
highlights of Obama's gun agenda -- including bans on assault weapons and
high-capacity ammunition magazines -- seem to have little chance of winning
approval in the Senate, let alone the House.Polls show more than 8
in 10 people back expanded background checks. Even so, the fight will
be difficult in both chambers, especially the House, where increasing numbers
of district lines are drawn to protect incumbents, said James Pasco, executive
director of the Fraternal Order of Police."They're not going to have a
constituency in every instance that is champing for that bill," said Pasco,
whose group has backed the drive for expanded background checks.The director
