Archaeologists have found the rusting remains of 44 submarines off the United
Kingdoms coast, an oceanic graveyard made up mostly of vessels from the
German Imperial Navy dating to World War I.Der Spiegel reports a quartet
of divers are now at work probing the massive trove of 41
German U-boats, and a trio of English submarines, found at depths of
up to 50 feet, off Englands southern and eastern coasts.Donning an ultrasound
sonar device as if it were a wristwatch, underwater archaeologist Mark Dunkley
tells the German news magazine he anticipates most of the newly unearthed
submarines will eventually be found to contain the perished crews remains.-
Archaeologist Mark Dunkley"We owe it to these people to tell their story,"
Dunkley reportedly said, adding, "We divers only approach the boats with
great caution. Venturing inside would definitely be extremely dangerous."Dunkley,
who is employed by English Heritage, a public agency bureau within Englands
larger Department for Culture, Media and Sport, says action is urgently
needed to preserve the remarkable, historic find.He says he and his
team plan to utilize robots to pierce the de facto underwater
coffins to reap whatever artifacts are inside. "Perhaps we'll find a cup
or a sign with a name on it," Dunkley told Der Spiegel.Prior
to the find, historians were baffled as to the fate of the

all moves by a succession of administrations to restrict press access."People
will never know how hard it is to get information," Thomas told
an interviewer, "especially if it's locked up behind official doors where,
if politicians had their way, they'd stamp TOP SECRET on the color

filing for Detroit marks a final step in the chrome-plated citys decades-long
decline which started with the countrys overall manufacturing slowdown
and continued with the departure of U.S. automakers and residents, leaving
behind a sprawling city trying to survive on dwindling coffers.Detroit was
in the 1950s a worldwide hub of auto manufacturing, making it the
fourth-largest U.S. city with one of the countrys highest per-capita incomes.However,
the so-called Motor Citys decline started soon after with residents -- following
their counterparts in other U.S. cities starting to move to the
suburbs and take with them businesses, jobs and tax dollars.Historians argue
the deadly 1967 riot in Detroit, one of the many so-called race
riots across the country in the 1960s, accelerated the trend.And as the
population dwindled from roughly 1.8 million to 700,000, city officials
struggled to keep up with municipal services in the 142-square-mile city,
with a tax base just half of what it was in the
1950s.Meanwhile, auto companies began opening plants in other cities as
Japan-made cars dominated the international market.By 2009, the U.S. auto
industry collapsed with the entire economy, eventually pulling down Detroit
with it.The citys efforts to provide and maintain such basic services as
law enforcement and trash removal were further complicated by the costs
of paying uni

on the student newspaper, that she decided she wanted to become a
reporter.After graduating from Detroit's Wayne University (now Wayne State

would follow for Thomas, among them President Richard M. Nixon's breakthrough
trip to China in 1972.When the Watergate scandal began consuming Nixon's
