BAGHDAD Mortar shells and bombs targeted worshippers shortly after noon
prayers on Friday at two mosques north of Baghdad, killing nine people
and wounding more than two dozen others, police said. It's unclear what prompted
the attacks, but violence has been on the rise ahead of provincial
elections set for Saturday. The vote is for local officials in several
provinces across the country, including the capital, Baghdad. Authorities
have pledged to bolster security for the elections.Police said the first
attack occurred as worshippers left the Sunni mosque of al-Muthana in Khalis,
a former stronghold of the Sunni insurgency about 50 miles north of
Baghdad. Seven people were killed and 14 others were wounded when mortar
shells destroyed the mosque.Later, in the city of Kirkuk, a roadside bomb
exploded among Shiite worshippers as they were heading home after prayers
at the al-Tamimi mosque. Police said two worshippers were killed and 14
others were wounded.Medics in nearby hospitals confirmed the dead toll.
All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized
to speak to reporters. The new violence came a day after a suicide
bombing attack on a Baghdad cafe killed 32 people and wounded dozens.
The rare evening attack struck the third floor of a building in
the predominantly Sunni neighborhood of Amiriyah while it was packed with
young people enjoying water pipes and playing pool.
he's drunk I don't believe him. He
went inside and closed the door. He was shaking and very nervous.
I only believe him when the cops came."Ahmed says police took the
gas station surveillance video tapes, and photos from the gas station store
across the street where Ahmed believes the suspects stopped to buy something.
Ahmed says he believes that was when the carjacking victim was shoved
out of the car.Ahmed said the young man did not appear injured,
just badly shaken by the carjacking.Ahmed too was shaken up."It has been
very crazy difficult night for me," he said. "But I am so
happy because they catch the one guy and will catch the other.
That is good."

<p style="font-size:xx-small;"> A leading Republican said Friday that the unfolding events in Boston underscore
the need to address "gaps and loopholes" in the nation's immigration system,
stressing that any new immigration bill should tighten screening to stop
those "who wish to do us harm."Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, addressed the
terror attack and ongoing manhunt at the start of a Capitol Hill
hearing on newly unveiled comprehensive immigration legislation. The Boston
crisis rapidly overshadowed the hearing, the first held for the major piece
of legislation. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano had been scheduled
to testify but canceled as federal law enforcement agencies were pulled
into the crime scene. Grassley, though, suggested the attacks in Boston
could influence how the immigration bill is considered."It's important for
us to understand the gaps and loopholes in our immigration system. While
we don't yet know the immigration status of the people who have
terrorized the communities in Massachusetts, when we find out, it will help
shed light on the weaknesses of our system," said Grassley, the top
Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee. The two suspects have been
identified as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, and his brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev,
26, who was killed early Friday morning. The two are believed to be
from the region near Chechnya. One source briefed on the matter said
they are thought to have arrived in the United States about a
decade ago. Po
The bodies of 12 people have been recovered after an enormous Texas
fertilizer plant explosion that demolished surrounding neighborhoods for
blocks and left more about 200 other people injured, authorities said Friday.Texas
Department of Public Safety Sgt. Jason Reyes said it was "with a
heavy heart" that he confirmed 12 bodies had been pulled from the
area of the plant explosion.Even before investigators released a confirmed
number of fatalities, the names of the dead were becoming known in
the town of 2,800 and a small group of firefighters and other
first responders who may have rushed toward the plant to battle a
pre-explosion blaze was believed to be among them.Reyes said he could not
confirm Friday how many of those killed were first responders. The mourning
already had begun at a church service at St. Mary of the
Assumption Catholic Church the previous night."We know everyone that was
there first, in the beginning," said Christina Rodarte, 46, who has lived
in West for 27 years. "There's no words for it. It is
a small community, and everyone knows the first responders, because anytime
there's anything going on, the fire department is right there, all volunteer."One
victim Rodarte knew and whose name was released was Kenny Harris, a
52-year-old captain in the Dallas Fire Department who lived south of West.
He was off duty at the time but responded to the fire
to help, according to a statement from the city of Dallas.Authorities spe
