the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations, accept
gay marriage. The Episcopal Church recently approved a blessing for same-sex
couples, but each bishop must decide whether to allow the ceremony in
his or her local diocese. The majority of Christian denominations, however,
view homosexual relationships as sinful. In more hierarchical denominations,
like the Roman Catholic Church or the United Methodist Church, individual
churches are bound by the policies of the larger denomination. But nondenominational
churches and those loosely affiliated with more established groups often
individually decide how to address social issues such as gay marriage.Eric
Rassbach is an attorney with the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, a
public interest legal group that defends the free expression rights of all
faiths. He said it is unlikely the government would try to force
a pastor to perform a same-sex marriage, but churches that rent out
their facilities to the general public could face problems if they refuse
to rent to gay couples.Although his organization has not advocated it, he
said it could strengthen a church's legal position to adopt a statement
explaining its beliefs about marriage."A number of groups don't have a written
doctrine," Rassbach said. "Say a group like the Primitive Baptists -- they
don't want a written-down credo, but the courts like written-down things."Rassbach
said it was important for churches to get their beliefs
VATICAN CITY Pope Francis says he has been disturbed by "terrible
images" of atrocities occurring in Syria, and he is urging the international
community to step up its efforts to end the civil war there.Francis
told tens of thousands of people in St. Peter's Square on Sunday
that Syrian and rebel forces must put down their arms. He renewed
his call for dialogue as the U.S. considers a military response to
the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria last week.Francis cited the
intensification of the "war among brothers," including massacres and "atrocious
deeds," and he urged the international community to "put all its efforts"
toward helping Syria find a solution to this "tragic situation."He also
expressed solidarity for the victims and all those suffering, especially
the children.

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">JERUSALEM Prominent Israeli Cabinet ministers are calling for a U.S.-led
response to an alleged chemical attack in Syria last week that the
prime minister describes as a "terrible crime."Benjamin Netanyahu told his
Cabinet Sunday that "this situation cannot continue." Justice Minister Tzipi
Livni told Israel Radio that a U.S. response to the alleged poison
gas attack would help discourage future chemical weapons use, but also have
security implications for Israel.Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz told
Army Radio the attack requires a response. He said the chances that
Syria would attack Israel as a result of U.S. action were slim
but that the army should be prepared for such an eventuality.Neither Netanyahu
nor the ministers specified what type of response they were urging. The
U.S. is considering military options.

N.Y. New York's attorney general sued Donald Trump for $40 million
Saturday, saying the real estate mogul helped run a phony "Trump University"
that promised to make students rich but instead steered them into expensive
and mostly useless seminars, and even failed to deliver promised apprenticeships.Trump
shot back that the Democrat's lawsuit is false and politically motivated.Attorney
General Eric Schneiderman says many of the 5,000 students who paid up
to $35,000 thought they would at least meet Trump but instead all
they got was their picture taken in front of a life-size picture
of "The Apprentice" TV star."Trump University engaged in deception at every
stage of consumers' advancement through costly programs and caused real
financial harm," Schneiderman said. "Trump University, with Donald Trump's
knowledge and participation, relied on Trump's name recognition and celebrity
status to take advantage of consumers who believed in the Trump brand
