s are still
more focused on ordinary gun violence, especially related to the drug trade.Manchin
and Toomey have staked out center ground on the issue of firearms
background checks, and something might eventually pass the Senate and be
modified again in the House. Yes, there is a call for a
commission on mass violence, but the success rate for Washington commissions
is abysmal.Whatever happens, one thing we now know is that anything that
does pass in the name of Newtown wont address what happened in
Newtown. And Now, A Word From CharlesI think they cleverly were able to
get the press to believe that there was a huge concession with
the change in the calculation of inflation, which creates a miniscule shift
in the curve on Social Security. It's a quarter of a penny
on the dollar. It is a very small change.-- Charles Krauthammer on

ly members and others. It is meant to
assuage concerns that the current version could be a burden on hunters
and families exchanging firearms among them.Republicans could also throw
up amendments in the days ahead that would turn off Democrats. And, importantly,
Senate leaders will likely have to marshal another round of 60 votes
in order to cut off debate and proceed to final passage. That
procedural vote could be more difficult than Thursday's, as Schumer acknowledged.NRA
Institute for Legislative Action Director Chris Cox, in a pointed letter
to senators this week, reminded them that the NRA is watching their
votes carefully -- on everything from amendments to procedural matters."Given
the importance of these issues, votes on all anti-gun amendments or proposals
will be considered in NRA's future candidate evaluations," Cox wrote. He
urged the Senate to replace many of the bill's provisions with language
focused on the mental health system, school security and prosecuting violent
criminals."Rather than focus its efforts on restricting the rights of America's
100 million law-abiding gun owners, there are things Congress can do to
fix our broken mental health system; increase prosecutions of violent criminals;
and make our schools safer," he wrote. The NRA has already announced that
the Manchin-Toomey proposal on gun checks still does not do enough to
protect Second Amendment rights.Reid is looking to start the votes on amendments

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">driver's license information obtained by the Department of Revenue. He told
reporters: "This state of Missouri is not collecting a bunch of unuseful
data to send to some sort of magical database someplace to mess
with people. It's not happening."Republican Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder asserted
Thursday that Nixon had "misled Missourians." But Replogle and Spillars
said they had never told Nixon that the concealed guns list had
been shared with a federal investigator and only learned of it themselves
after the fact.Missouri lawmakers first raised privacy concerns last month
after learning that the Department of Revenue had in December begun making
electronic copies of driver's license applicants' personal documents, such
as concealed carry permits and birth certificates, to be kept in a
state database. Licensing officials say the intent is to catch fraud. They
note that a clerk at a St. Joseph office pleaded guilty in
December in a scheme that used false personal documents to issue licenses
to more than 3,500 people living in the U.S. illegally. The documents being
scanned under new state procedures were not provided to the federal government.
Instead, the federal investigator received an electronic list of concealed
carry permit holders that the Revenue Department compiled as part of its
duties of placing concealed carry endorsements on driver's licenses.Replogle
said a St. Louis-based investigator in the inspector general's office of
the U.S.
nment
programs is soaring too. Facing such massive disruptions in an election
year is bad news for Democrats, and they are therefore quite willing
to hear from industry honchos who seek delays and exemptions to hold
down costs. It was once thought that the government could hold down premiums
through force by refusing increases. But while the Supreme Court may have
ruled that the government can force you to buy insurance, but no
one has said so far that anyone has to sell it. If
profits vanish, so too will Obamas partners in expanded coverage.Meantime,
special-interest groups harmed by the law manufacturers of medical devices,
hospitals, doctors, small businesses and others are keeping up the pressure
for changes to the law that would make it less generous, more
unaffordable and harder still to implement.Like the Republican governors
and lawmakers whose resistance Sebelius blames for the haywire implementation
of the law, the lobbyists havent given up either. And they never
will. But whomever Team Obama wants to blame for the growing list of
problems with the law, voters will always remember whose big [expletive]
deal this is.And Now, A Word From CharlesThe fact that [the murder
trial of a Philadelphia abortionist charged with killing seven infants born
alive] is not covered, I think is easily explained. It puts the
pro-abortion forces in a very bad light. It brings the issue of
late-term abortion starkly into relief.-- Charles Krautha
