i decided that every year for my birthday i will try and make a few mother=
s have a better birth-day for their newborns. i live near the lds humanitar=
ian center where all goods and donations are organized, boxed, and dispatch=
ed out to the world. the church pairs with philanthropic organizations to m=
eet specific needs. a constant need for orphanages and hospitals in develop=
ing countries is newborn kits: a layette gown, booties, cotton diapers and =
pins, a receiving blanket and ivory soap. quilts are also always needed. i =
can certainly spare some quilting time if it means a cold and lonely child =
somewhere will be wrapped up cozy! can you? i would like to deliver one new=
born kit and one quilt for each year of my life, every year, and i need you=
r help. so this year, my goal is 31 newborn kits and 31 quilts. next year 3=
2, and so on (the hope being that each year i'll be more organized and have=
more help...) and i'd love to blow the goal numbers away. it's definately =
worth the long drive, snacks: NUTS!!! i would die without nuts. i love roas=
ted almonds, cashews, peanuts. i also love those roasted edamame. they tast=
e like nuts even though they're not. and nuts taste really good with a few =
slices of swiss cheese. also deli meat slices, celery with peanut butter on=
it, a few whole grain crackers with cheese, beef jerky, sugar free snack p=
acks, stuffed mushrooms, hard boiled eggs, string cheese, protein bars, cru=

nd then i found myself a mother. funny, i thought i'd teach awhile longer a=
nd have grant all to myself and save some money. ten months after we were m=
arried i was a stay at home mom, living the student life again while grant =
went back to school. a few months later, another unplanned event- my mom pa=
ssed away suddenly. just a phone call one night. she had an aneurysm. and a=
lthough this was a surprise of the worst kind, it was the most spiritual ti=
me of my life. much good and understanding has come through that loss. Marc=

ments are very specific. they are very clear that quality is more important=
than quantity, we want these goods to be new and be items that will last. =

am willing to do all the sewing work, as well as packaging all the kits. i=
f you want to help, i am looking for donations of soap, flannel fabric, fla=
tfold cotton diapers, batting, booties, well... everything! bad news: i hav=
e to have surgery. what do you look for in a best friend? * 31 newly p=
urchased or sewn receiving blankets between 36 and 45 square inches. if the=
y are cotton or flannel they need to be double sided. they can also be sing=
le thickness fleece with the edges serged (i can do this on my serger if yo=
