Hi:
I tried to use it but I get "Document Contains No Data". I looked in the
Perl directory and found other Net: types but not SMTP. Do I have to get
the SMTP module? I was told it would be part of Perl. I'm using the latest
version from activestate.
Thanks for your help.

=====
- A line in the body of a post is considered to be original if it
does *not* match the regular expression /^\s{0,3}(?:>|:|\S+>|\+\+)/.
- All text after the last cut line (/^-- $/) in the body is
considered to be the author's signature.
- The scanner prefers the Reply-To: header over the From: header
in determining the "real" e-mail address and name.

hi,
i have a problem with a string in a cgi =>
($TYPE = $ENV{'HTTP_USER_AGENT'});
$word = "\Q$TYPE";
.
BLOCK: {
$recall = 0;
while (<FILE>) {
/$word/io && last BLOCK; #word exists->get out
$recall = tell(FILE); #remember where hit was
}
.
why this don't work ? my $word isn't found in FILE :(
i have also tried /$_word/io and so..
$TYPE can be something like : bla/3.98 [xyz]; (8282.9292)
and perl5 has problms with the [] :(
with \Q this should work but it didn't :((
and with \Q the output looks ugly <g> this would be ok but maybe there
is a better answer ?

You don't. NT doesn't support this "magic number" style of
execution.
You either:
1. Just type "perl whatever.pl" on the command line. This is
the best solution.
2. Go through the rigamarole to create a batch file
that runs the perl script -- tools are included with
the distribution (if I remember right, I never use this)
3. Associate .pl with perl.exe and run it from Explorer.
This is a bad, bad, bad, bad, bad idea since Perl
is command-line oriented and you will likely just
see a command prompt window flash on the screen and
not know what happened.
If you are trying to run a CGI Perl program, get and install the ISAPI
version of Perl. The command line Perl doesn't work with IIS or PWS.
(If it does, getting it to work wouldn't be worth the hassle. I've
never gotten it to work in 2-3 years.) The ISAPI version of Perl
automatically installs a handler for .pl files *in the web server*, so
a URL like http://whatever/scripts/foo.pl automatically runs the ISAPI
DLL.

Oh, Abigail. Do I read your question at face value and think you don't
know what Dave is, or is your question disengenuous? Do you really not
know that Dave is a program and not a person?

Do you really not know how Dave works?

Except that when Dave controls a group, you don't get to cancel your own
articles, either.

It's probably because in the newsgroups Dave regularly patrols (the
only ones I'm aware of are in news.admin.net-abuse.*), Dave resurrects
*all* cancelled articles as a defense against rogue cancels. Hence,
one can't easily cancel one's own posts. Mr. Stanley probably wasn't
aware that Dave's presence in this group is simply a temporary
measure.

Subject: Special: Digest Administrivia (Last modified: 12 Mar 98)
Message-Id: <null>
Administrivia:
Special notice: in a few days, the new group comp.lang.perl.moderated
should be formed. I would rather not support two different groups, and I
know of no other plans to create a digested moderated group. This leaves
me with two options: 1) keep on with this group 2) change to the
moderated one.
If you have opinions on this, send them to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
the single line:
subscribe perl-users
or:
unsubscribe perl-users
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.misc (and this Digest), send your
article to perl-users@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.
To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.
The Meta-FAQ, an article containing information about the FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users meta-faq". The real FAQ, as it
appeared last in the newsgroup, can be retrieved with the request "send
perl-users FAQ". Due to their sizes, neither the Meta-FAQ nor the FAQ
are included in the digest.
The "mini-FAQ", which is an updated version of the Meta-FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users mini-faq". It appears twice
weekly in the group, but is not distributed in the digest.
For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
