It thinks that .gz files are compressed VRML worlds, so it's uncompressing
them and trying to display what it finds. Of course, it can't, so it
complains about it.
Right click on the links and choose "save link as" to get the file instead.

I have been using the FTP module for a little while now and I think it does
the job like a champ. However, I need to be able to change the file
permissions of the uploaded files and I don't see anything like a chmod
command in the documentation.

Hello,
I am new to Perl and would like to ask your help in solving the
following problem.
I have a large text file of which I would like to access only parts at a
time (say from section 1 to section2...etc). I'd like to use regular
expression to search for Pattern A and from Pattern A manipulate the
data until Pattern B is found. I read the file with 'while
($line=<FILE>)' and would try to match something like ' if
$line=~/patternA/ ...do various manipulations but I don't know how I can
search to say that when $line=~/patternB/ then exit from here and
begin something different.
Could you please help me on this problem? Any help and advice is greatly
appreciated.

It sounds as if you want the cool, useful, but often-confusing "scalar
range" ("..") operator.
while (<>) {
if (/patternA/../patternB/) {
chomp;
print "One line in that range is '$_'\n";
}
}
If you don't understand that operator - and most people don't - you can do
(almost) the same thing "the hard way", like this.
my $within_range = 0; # A true/false flag
while (<>) {
if ($within_range) {
$within_range = 0 if /patternB/;
} else {
$within_range = 1 if /patternA/;
}
if ($within_range) {
chomp;
print "One line in that range is '$_'\n";
}
}
It's "almost" the same primarily because the first program counts the
/patternB/ line as being within range, while the second doesn't. (Trying
to make the second one work the same way as the first is difficult, in an
enlightening sort of way. :-) Hope this helps!

functionally equivalent.

Easier: $count = () = $string =~ m/pattern/g;
The list context on the right-hand assignment causes m//g to return a
list of all matches, and the scalar left-hand assignment then transforms
this into the length of the list of matches.

1) That still involves extra work (not the least of which is going
through your saved messages looking to see which ones haven't shown up on
Usenet in a reasonable amount of time).
2) You might want to word a direct reply differently from a newsgroup
followup. When you're addressing your remarks to a single person, you can
be a little more terse or even cryptic because you can assume more shared
context (i.e. "being on the same wavelength") than when addressing them to
an audience. A reply that makes perfect sense to the specific person who
asked a question could easily come off as confusing to others.

Sure; you can insert just about anything in the block of a for loop. Why
not just try it and see? Do note, though, that you should get rid of the
semicolons at the end of the if and elsif lines.

I don't see why not. All you have to do is write something simple to test:
for ( $I=6; $I > 0; $I -= 1) {
if ( ($I % 3) eq 0 ) { print "$I dividable by 3\n"; }
elsif ( ($I % 5) eq 0 ) { print "$I dividable by 5\n"; }
elsif ( ($I % 2) eq 0 ) { print "$I devidable by 2\n"; }

... works OK on my WinNT machine - when run from a command prompt. I'm
using the Activeware port. Same result on Ultrix UNIX and DU UNIX.

Actually, I still want it to be unpopular -- wildly unpopular, loathed
and reviled. That way, I can get rich being one of the few brave
programmers willing to maintain all those Perl apps out there that
everyone else is too horrified to deal with.
