That's the problem. Software without associated documentation is
near to useless and not complete. If you want to change the software
(which is usally encouraged by free software) you are hindered by
the fact that you are unable to update the documentation. So you
end up by starting from scratch (either the documentation or the
whole software project).
I do not have problems where good documentation comes along with
the sources and where additional proprietary documentation is sold
by O'Reilly or others (for me it is like consulting and training).
Perl is a good example for this.

my Unix server kicks back this message (below) when I run the debug
(perl -c xyz.pl) in telnet. I checked the latest download of perl (unix)
- it's not there! Now what?! Is there another add-on download.

All I'm saying is that that's all well and good for those of you who know
that for a fact, but this guy didn't know if his problem had to do with some
sort of incorrect scripting that somehow functioned with a couple of
browsers or if it was some IE problem, specifically. He seems to have
posted the question asking for any help anyone could give in what seemed
like a logical place to him: a place where people who have a good grasp on
Perl help out with miscellaneous issues. And you're right - he needed to be
told that his question more appropriately belonged in a different arena. I
thought that the response by Tom Phoenix was perfect, and even more thorough
than the original poster could have hoped.
I completely recognize this need to maintain focus in the newsgroup
(especially one of this size), I just don't understand why, if Abigail wants
to take it upon herself to help do this (which she does frequently in this
newsgroup), she has to do it in such a manner that belittles the person to
whom she is responding (as she also frequently does).
The thing is, I also recognize that it's none of my business, it's just that
I see my own struggle to learn Perl embodied in the original question, and
the attitude that I fear I'll receive if ever I ask a question embodied in
Abigail's response. I just wonder if perhaps she has forgotten what it's
like to not know exactly where to go to find answers.
Anyway, I'm sorry - I know this kind of post is really pretty much a waste
of everyone's time. I'll stay out of it from now on. If anyone does want
to respond but doesn't want to muddy up the newsgroup with something off the

I read in the Perl-32 faq that Tcl is not yet fully available for NT
4.0. Is there a way we can use the regular windows GUI commands to do
this (except for using VB, because I don't have that)? OLE is used to
call windows application, but I am not sure how to use something similar
to draw windows on the screen.
Any advise is appreciated!

Does anyone know the correct headers to output to the
MSIE family browsers to allow imagepush via a perl script.
We have Netscape 3.0 and Netscape 4.0 family browser running
fine but IE is another story.
Here is the Headers for Netscape that we use...

You see, that's the part Abigail and I don't understand. The solution
you got in email (/^[0-9]+$/) is *identical* in behavior to one of the
solutions provided by the faq (/^\d+$/). We're trying to figure out how
it can be that the former works for you but the latter doesn't.

Known it is. But it does none of what I need. The one second
resolution is useless for in vivo testing. The perldoc says
nothing about measuring I/O or RAM consumption. Perhaps there

Having read the thread BEFORE posting and having written a few CGI
mailer's, good or bad, myself - I would honestly say that unless you ask the
Internet User for his/her e-mail address and then using the appropriate
switches for the mailer in question - I don't think CGI can determine the
Internet Users e-mail address - not unless there are aspects of CGI I am not
aware of...
So, unless you know the Internet Users e-mail address, there isn't anything
you can do...

I'm trying to overcome the lack of a sendmail programme for Macperl.
Someone suggested using "use Net::SMTP".
I've debugged the script (at the bottom) and here is the result. I've
tried playing around with it, but no luck. This syntax is new to me.
Below you will find 2 debug reports. The first is the Macperl debug
report. The second is what netscape gave me (running the net::smpt debug
value). And last you will find the exact script I used.
From what I can see, it must be a syntax error in the script. The
server accepts the smpt call but ... you'll see ...
You can run the script from:

appeared last in the newsgroup, can be retrieved with the request "send

are included in the digest.
The "mini-FAQ", which is an updated version of the Meta-FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users mini-faq". It appears twice
