I've installed the latest version of Perl from the CPAN site, but there
is no 'a2p' utility. Does one exist yet, or is the code available for
building?

I have done fine under HP-UX using values 2 and 8 respectively, as

Be nice if it had a real user interface, though. If I had the free time I'd
like to create a CGI/JavaScript front-end to the debugger, which could then be
run locally in loopback mode or remotely for real CGI debugging. The command
line interface it has now is, like, from the stone ages, daddy-o.

From: Michael Caerwyn <mcaerwyn@winternet.com>
Subject: Hmm...STDIN & inetd, what's up?
Message-Id: <6f8t47$bvd$1@blackice.winternet.com>

Good Morning,

    I am having an interesting problem. I am starting a script from
inetd, then reading from STDIN to get some data from the client side
of this script and I am then calling getpwnam and it "blows away" the
STDIN variable, and makes the script useless.

    Notes: The script, of course, works being called directly, or
            through a pipe such as echo "name" | script.
	   The OS is Solaris 2.6
	   The DB is 1.86, compiled under solaris from the source at
	    sleepy cat,
	   The inetd line is:

<process> stream tcp	nowait	bin	/usr/sbin/prog.pl	prog.pl

	   I have looked at the FAQ and missed anything that matched this,
	   I have gone to the manual, plus another book and still didn't
	    find anything.
	   The script checks usernames to see if they are in the
            password file or in the sendmail aliases database,
	   I would prefer not to have to turn this into a stand alone.
	   I have tried closing the <STDIN> after reading the data,
	   I have tried assigning another variable to the data,
            immediately after reading it,
	   I have tried setting the variable by hand and running it
            through, it worked,

The script:

#!/usr/local/bin/perl
#
# This set of routines is a subset of the ones needed fir the "username"
# server. It contains two sections, 1st check the password file.
# then open and check the aliases database from sendmail.
#
# At the bottom of this test version is a "main" to let it be tested.
#
# 0.1 MDFC 1st draft at the logic.

use DB_File;

sub pwchk {
    my ($un, $nam, $pass, $uid) = $_[0];

    $nam = "";

    ($nam, $pass, $uid) = getpwnam($un);

    if ($un eq $nam) {
	return (1);
    }
    return(0);
}

sub aliasck {
    my ($un, %dbm, $who, $where) = $_[0];

    tie(%dbm, "DB_File", "/var/tmp/aliases.db", O_RDWR, 0666, $DB_HASH);

    while (($who, $where) = each %dbm ) {

	$who =~ s/://;

	if ( $who eq $un ) {
	    untie(%dbm);
	    return(1);
	}
    }
    untie(%dbm);
    return(0);
}

$a = "";
chomp($a = <STDIN>);

if (pwchk($a)) {
print "Password Entry\n";
} elsif (aliasck($a)) {
print "Alias Entry\n";
} else {
print "Username Okay.\n";
}

ENd of script.

  More strange notes:

    Placing prints in various place I got the following results:

	+) After the $a=<STDIN>     ::  Correct answer,
	+) After the start of pwdck :: Correct answer,
	+) Just after the getpwnam :: if in print correct, if in
               printf wrong, if in a print just before a printf the same.
	+) $nam never gets set.
	+) When in a printf after getpwnam such as:

	    printf("un :: %s  ||  nam :: %s\n", $un, $nam);

	    the printed result is: (get this)

 ||  nam ::

	    The whole un :: %s disappears...I haven't see that one before.

	Sorry to have rambled on, but I am tring to fill in all the blanks.

	Ideas requested,

The format for attachments over Internet e-mail is called
"Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions", often abbreviated to
MIME. Its format is specified in various Internet RFC documents
including 2045, 2046, 2047, 2048, and 2049.
<URL:ftp://ftp.std.com/obi/DARPA/rfc>

There are perl modules that help create (and parse) MIME formatted
documents, you can find them at <URL:http://www.perl.com/CPAN/

According to I R A Aggie <fl_aggie@thepentagon.com>:
:+ Certainly Perl's module concept is good first steps towards this type of
:+ user. But if someone has to get compilers, books, pages of FAQs,
:+ man pages, internet connections and web browsers (to search online
:+ archives and web pages) and seemingly then to learn to program in one
:+ language and THEN to learn perl, before being able in many cases to ask
:+ for help would seem to be a pretty steep intro curve for the appliance
:+ user.
:
:Do appliance users in the Real World go to Radio Shack, buy components,
:and put together a 4 head VHS tape recorder?
:
:No. Why should they expect to be able to walk in, slap together a
:couple of subroutines and a main program, and a functioning CGI script?
:These are the same people who complain that setting the said VCR's
:clock is hard. Do you want them modifying CGI scripts and putting
:them on YOUR server?

The fun of analogies can be drawn out to excruciating detail, with
participants claiming one's analogies don't fit. My next round of
analogy might go:

What many do as appliance users is go to Radio Shack and buy the tape
recorder and some tapes, take them home, plug them into the electricity and
the antenna or cable, and start watching videos. One day, they want to
record a show. So they pop out, buy a blank, put it into the recorder,
and press the button marked "record". Bingo - they have their show.

The internet users we are talking about have bought the tape recorder
(their computer) and the tapes (software to connect to their ISP, web
browsers, etc.). Now they want to plug them in and use them. And that
works for a while. Now they want to record a show (create a web
page). So they pop out and buy a blank tape (CGI for dummies or
whatever - with CD-ROM containing Perl, etc.) and want to put it into
their computer and press record. And the lucky ones may be able to
start out that way. Then comes the day they want to record a different
channel, or at a time in the near future (customize a CGI script).
They should not need to go out and learn about electro-magnetism and
the physics of how the VCR and tape interact (coding, debugging, etc.)
before they can do that. Most would appreciate the kindness of being able
to ask simple questions and get simple direct relatively polite answers.

But then, I am sure that there are those who feel that the analogy has
no relevance to the topic at hand, so it probably isn't worth pursuing.

Subject: Perl Compatable with IE4.0?
Message-Id: <35180AE6.C289FB1@lubypublishing.com>

I reciently wrote a small script that would allow someone to publish a
report to an area of one of our websites. The idea is simple, the
script reads in the form variables and formats them to the HTML page
which is indexed and displayed for the visitor.

Simple enough huh?

Well a strange thing has surfaced. In testing the script, I used
Netscape 3.0, Netscape 4.0, IE 3.0 and Aol 3.0 browsers without any
trouble.  I didn't use IE 4.0 because I still haven't decided where I
stand on that issue yet.

But wouldn't you now it, the first weekend the script was in use, it was
used by a user running IE 4.0 and he expirenced problems. Namely, his
input in the main story (report) field was trunkated after about three
to four hundred characters. No other browser had this problem except IE
4.0.

What is causing this?

Is there a way I can alter my script to prevent this from happening
without spliting the form field into several smaller fields?

Yours,

Do not miss this unusual opportunity.

Would you like to be a co-author and co-owner of a new generation INTERNET
SEARCH ENGINE which is totaly a new concept? Have you got some spare time to
make even a small part of it? I mean a procedure, script, picture, help,
description, some server work, marketing....

If so, join our team and help us to make our own SEARCH ENGINE.

I am not going to hire you but to co-operate with you in order to create our
own piece work.

This SEARCH ENGINE will be co-owned by all of those who will take part in the
work on it. It will not only be my own SEARCH ENGINE but yours too, depending
on the amount of work you will do.

The idea of this kind	of a SEARCH ENGINE is excellent. I think it will be
the most popular SEARCH ENGINE in the world. This is my own idea I want to
introduce to all Internet users. This amusing tool will significantly improve
searching the Internet.

I do not want to say more about my idea.
Your turn now.
I will wait for your e-mail with co-operation proposal for one month.
There are no fees to join our team but sponsors are welcomed.
Any other kind of help is also welcomed.

Just send me your e-mail with your name, e-mail address, age, your
achievments in the field and the kind of work on the project you are
interested in. A sample of your work you have done so far and you are proud
of. A sample of your work is a must but no more than 10Kbytes. Speaking and
writing English is essential, too.

Oh, go on with your bad self. Shoo! Shoo!

Seriously, when you build/install the win32 standard port, you should
be asked if you want to install HTML docs. Just say yes. Although
POD has always been *quite* convertible to troff, HTML, text, etc,
etc, etc, the AS port didn't seem to include any this doc with the
distribution. Nor did it include the pod2<whatever> converters.

By installing the standard port with all of the HTML-ified docs, lots
of kewlt0kers will be able to cr00z the d0k and l33k for what thA
n33dz.

I took another look at Chapter 2 of the Camel book and now realize that I
can "use strict" and still declare a global hash with "use qw(%config)".
Thanks to everyone who replied.

amazing that the letter in in plain text. maybe that should have been

i can read plain text just fine. what is that gibberish you sent? who the
hell needs to encode perl text? is this an example of source hiding so
many ask for? why don't you attach a perl undump of uour script? it
would be as useful.

NO because i can't read the code!!

You really need a beginner's book on programming Perl. Or you need to
hire a programmer.

Assuming you're talking about regular expressions, to match a single
whitespace character, the code is:

\s

but you haven't given anywhere near enough context to even understand what
you're trying to do.

I suspect you are running two different perl binaries.

Aaron - are you sure the `perl' that is invoked by cron is
/usr/local/bin/perl? Are you invoking it with a cron line like
this:

	cron /export/service/www-home/https-www2/bin/registrar.pl

Why do you invoke it like this? With a first line as you described:

	#!/usr/local/bin/perl

registrar.pl should run fine if the cron entry looks like this:

	/export/service/www-home/https-www2/bin/registrar.pl

PS If you know Joan Shobbrook tell her I said hi!

Using Perl for config files is a Lisp-like approach to programming.
Lisp and Perl can treat data as code, and generate and evaluate such
code on the fly. This is very powerful.

This flexibility can become a problem if you let it get out of
hand. But that is not a problem with the technique -- it is
a human problem. The same person who let's their Perl config
file grow out of control is likely to do something else poorly
while implementing features in the application code itself.

Avoiding Perl config files only avoids one place for bugs. A new
feature is as likely to be buggy if implemented in a config file or in
the application code.

What is wrong with it is that the vast majority of people - especially
newbies - are not using UNIX.

Visit www.perl.com and check out the Win32 section. There are some choices you

Subject: Why hasn't there been a vote on moderating cplm yet ?
Message-Id: <3518164B.24E66EF9@order.booktraders.com>

Hi,

I am reading this list regularly since a week to make up my
mind if and how to start learning Perl.

I would not mind if this list would be moderated at all, as
really almost any question somewhat precisely formulated gets
a helpful answer (which I think is amazing to say the least).

Why is voting on this a problem and why hasn't it been done ?

What is so bad about moderation ? It would make the list much
more helpful and usable, as long as answers are given clearly.
(meaning not being obscure in the code for the sake of being
"elegant" if the person who posts can't handle "elegant" answers
yet).

Looking at how much time (and emotions) are spent to straighten
out one poster, I would say, one should not waste great resources
(proficient Perl programmers) like this.

Can someone tell me what the main reason is that no vote or
decision has been made to moderate cplm?

Birgitt Funk

Administrivia:

The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
the single line:

	subscribe perl-users
or:
	unsubscribe perl-users

to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.

To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.misc (and this Digest), send your
article to perl-users@ruby.oce.orst.edu.

To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.

To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.

The Meta-FAQ, an article containing information about the FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users meta-faq". The real FAQ, as it
appeared last in the newsgroup, can be retrieved with the request "send
perl-users FAQ". Due to their sizes, neither the Meta-FAQ nor the FAQ
are included in the digest.

The "mini-FAQ", which is an updated version of the Meta-FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users mini-faq". It appears twice
weekly in the group, but is not distributed in the digest.

For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
