I'm experiencing a problem upgrading my Perl 5.00m to the 5.003. I've
tried looking through the FAQs & also a search through www.dejanews.com
but all I found were a bunch of people bombing out at the same place
but a different error.
Anyways, here's the deal:
1.) sh Configure works fine (accepting all defaults)
2.) While running "make", the following error appears:
rm -f libperl.a
ar rcv libperl.a perl.o gv.o toke.o perly.o ap.o regcomp.o dump.o
util.o mg.o hv.o av.o run.o pp_hot.o sv.o pp.o scope.o pp_ctl.o
pp_sys.o doop.o doio.o reg exec.o taint.o deb.o globals.o
cc -L/usr/local/lib -o miniperl miniperlmain.o libperl.a -lgdbm -ldb
-ldl -lm -lc
ld: cannot open -ldl: no such file or directory
make: *** [miniperl] Error 1
Apprently I'm missing something but what the hell is "dl"??
FYI: My linux is Red Hat Linux 3.0.3 and is NOT the newer 2.0 Kernel..
Thanks in advance..

I would recommend to anybody who wants to write such code to read a few
books about operating systems (locks, semaphores, dead locks, etc) AND
about transaction managemant (i.e. the different lock protocols like 2PL
(which is the protocol Tom used)).
This is NO simple stuff !

Of course, if they're like mine, they charge an extra $60 per month

I use a Perl script called maillog.cgi that you can probably get by

Change providers ;-)
It is a cutthroat market for providers, surely someone else

Do you mean M$ Internet Information Server? Frontpage is a M$ HTML

Although perl strives to be as platform independant as possible, it
breaks down on various limitations prescribed by said OSs. Besides
creating a directory, setting permissions and such, what are you looking
to accomplish?
Examples of your test work would help show the way...

The listed address is fake to avoid junk email.
Please respond to tarang@inetdirect.net if you can help me with my
request. Thanks in advance.
I need a script which can parse a log file which is generated when
either of 2 images are loaded from my site. The log file is in the
format:
Date and time|http referrer|ip address of host requesting image|Image X
or Y.
What I need is some code that can run through this file and tell me how
many unique host impressions I am getting per day for the images,
instead of counting all the redundant host impressions. I also need the
code to tell me the number of unique host impressions per image.
If anyone can help me, I would appreciate it.

perl -ne 'print if /^Subject:/ or not /^From / .. /^$/'
Have a look at the perlop(1) manpage for a description of what
the extremely useful .. operator does. The command above reads:
"for every line in the input, print it if it's either a Subject
header or if it's not between the beginning of a header and the
end of the header."

ODBC isn't as bad as you think. A well-written ODBC driver will
perform just
as well as the native interface. In fact, some ODBC drivers
significantly outperform native API access. For example, accessing
DB2/NT through Intersolv's ODBC driver
is 2-3 times faster than through IBM's native CLI interface. The
reason, apparently, is that Intersolv wasn't satisfied with the
performance of the IBM client-side libraries, and instead wrote its own
code to talk directly across the wire to the server.

Improper syntax above. Should read:
GET /perl HTTP/1.0
Additionally you may supply 'Host: ...' request header for non-IP VH.

You just use the normal escape character, of course, to escape the slash.
It's the same one used by zillions of standard utilities like in sed,
awk, grep, the editors, the shells, C, C++, java, tcl, python, etc.
Check out the perlre and perlop manpages for examples. There are also
obvious examples in the FAQ at http://www.perl.com/perl/faq/index.html
for you to examine.

Actually, exactly the opposite would be true. Socialism has one major
flaw, a flaw that will forever make it never more than marginally
successful (unlike capitalism, which, over time is always very
successful). Socialism fails to take into account the simple fact that
any human will work harder and smarter when he/she directly enjoys the
fruits of his/her labor. Why should any person work harder than needed
to provide for him/herself when everything beyond their needs goes to
someone else. Socialism assumes that all people are willing to work for
the social good.

There is already an OS/2 build of Perl 5.003 available on hobbes.nmsu.edu. I
would recommend downloading this version instead of trying to compile your own
(although the EMX port of the GNU C compiler is free as well, it's a PITA to
get working correctly).

Hullo:
I'm having problems writing/erading to/from a serial port on both
Win95 and WinNT. Have tried everything - even REXX (shudder), but I
can't get to 1st base. Would appreciate help on the following:
-"As per: Perl for Win32 FAQ from Evangelo Prodromou
-
-Serial ports can be opened just like files in Perl for Win32. To open
- COM1, just do this:
- open( PORT, "+>COM1" ) or die "Can't open COM1: $!";
-You should be able to read from and write to the file handle using
-the standard I/O functions (read() and print()), but
-not the system functions (sysread() and syswrite()). [Anyone done
-this? Does it really work? Caveats? -ESP] "
I tried the following:
-open (COMPORT, "+>COM1") ||
- die("Serial port not available.");
-
-if (print COMPORT ("1234567890",0xff)) {
- print ("It worked!\n"); # debug
-}
Well, it DIDN'T work (with a null modem) in spite of what it says.
Neither did 'ATDT' stuff (going to a modem). I want to transmit data
across a null modem cable, and read it on the other side.
I imagine that I'm missing something very basic, but ...
Thanks for any help..

Administrivia:
The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
the single line:
subscribe perl-users
or:
unsubscribe perl-users
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.misc (and this Digest), send your
article to perl-users@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.
To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.
The Meta-FAQ, an article containing information about the FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users meta-faq". The real FAQ, as it
appeared last in the newsgroup, can be retrieved with the request "send
perl-users FAQ". Due to their sizes, neither the Meta-FAQ nor the FAQ
are included in the digest.
The "mini-FAQ", which is an updated version of the Meta-FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users mini-faq". It appears twice
weekly in the group, but is not distributed in the digest.
For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
