Message-Id: <KL56Lw.1DLw@zorch.sf-bay.org>
Math::Polynomial version 1.002 should shortly become available from:
http://search.cpan.org/~mhasch/Math-Polynomial-1.002/
Math::Polynomial is a Perl class representing polynomials in one
variable. It provides a set of operations defined for polynomials,
like addition, multiplication, division with remainder, evaluation,
nesting, etc., as well as attribute inspection and formatting
capabilities.
Changes in version 1.002 include:
- Optimizations for interpolation polynomial calculation and
division by monic polynomials.
- Additional from_roots() constructor and mul_root() / div_root()
methods suggested by Kevin Ryde in [rt.cpan.org #46427].
As usual, bug reports and suggestions are welcome -- please submit
them through the CPAN RT:
http://rt.cpan.org/NoAuth/ReportBug.html?Queue=Math-Polynomial

Never mind that -- just filter out anything with 'googlegroups' in the
Message-ID header, and you'll block not only the blogspot idiots, but upwards
of 90% of the replica watch, handbag, and shoe spams as well.

Subject: regex problem
Message-Id: <f971ba15-7f37-41a2-b843-99e4b5481c5f@w31g2000prd.googlegroups.com>
Hi all, I know I will be told that I should be using one of the HTML
or XML parsers to perform this task, and you're right! :-) but still
I'd like to know why my little regex while() loop isn't working.
Here's a sample XHTML code snippet that I'm working on:
<pre>
<li>description <a href="overview_mh.html#overview">(1)</a>, <a
href="catalog.html#catalog">(2)</a>
</pre>
My goal:
1. Read a line of an XHTML file.
2. If it contains an href= attribute, grab everything up to the
opening href quote and print it out to a file.
3. Read the href attribute itself, change it and print the changed
version out to the file.
4. Delete everything from the beginning of the line up to the closing
quote of the href attribute.
5. Check to see if there's another href on the line; if so, repeat. If
not, print out the rest to the file.
Here's a code snippet:
<pre>
while($line =~ /^(.*?href\s*=\s*\")([^\"]+)(\".*)/i){ #"
my $prev =$1;
my $href =$2;
print NEW $prev;
# do some stuff to the href
# ...
print NEW $href;
# remove both $prev and $href from $line and continue
print "VALUE OF prev: $prev\n";
print " BEFORE: $line";
$line =~ s/^$prev//;
print " AFTER: $line";
$line =~ s/^$href//;
}
print $line;
</pre>
For some reason, the s/^$prev//; isn't working; The result looks
something like this:
VALUE OF prev: ">(1)</a>, <a href="
BEFORE: ">(1)</a>, <a href="catalog.html#catalog">(2)</a>
AFTER: ">(1)</a>, <a href="catalog.html#catalog">(2)</a>
Why isn't it deleting the value of $prev in $line?
Meanwhile, yes I'm looking at one of the parsers.
thanks,
Scott

You could have reduced your example to just the code above (plus an
initialization of $line).

$prev contains regex metacharacters, in this case the parens, which
don't match literally. As on any occasion when you want to match a
string literally, you need \Q:
$line =~ s/^\Q$prev//;

Or avoid problems with regexs altogether by using substr:
substr($line,0,length($prev),'');

Meh. I don't like substr (or index). Accessing strings by character
index just feels a bit crude for a high-level language like Perl.
Besides, I wouldn't have written the original program like that in the
first place. For a start, I would have incorporated the original match
and capture into the s/// up-front.
Still, substr is arguably cleaner than a pattern match you know will
succeed.

Starts a new process, executes the SET command in that process, and then
terminates that process.
>system("SETX AB BN");
Starts a different new process, executes the SETX command in that
process, and terminates that process.
>system("echo %A%");
Starts yet a third new process, executes the echo command in that
process, and terminates that process.
>print $ENV{'A'} . $ENV{'AB'};
And then prints the values of the environment variables A and AB as they
are set in the process, which is executing the Perl program and which
has nothing to do with the three earlier child processes..
If you want to set an environment variable in your Perl program/Perl
process then just do so:
$ENV{'A'} = 'c';
$ENV{'AB'} = 'BN';
Of course these settings will not be inherited by the parent process,
i.e. by the process that initiated the Perl process. If that's what you
had in mind then I suggest to consult
perldoc -q environment

#The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
#comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
#the single line:
#
# subscribe perl-users
#or:
# unsubscribe perl-users
#
#to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
NOTE: due to the current flood of worm email banging on ruby, the smtp
server on ruby has been shut off until further notice.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.
#To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
#to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
#where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.
#For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
#perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
#sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
#answer them even if I did know the answer.
