Hi,
I want to use a foreach in PERL in a way that on of the strings inside
it is empty string.
this is my foreach:
foreach my $var ( qw ( Hi Fofo) ) {
.
.
.
}
I want to add to the foreach that the $var will be an empty string and
Hi and Fofo.
do you know how can I do it
thanks in advance

That should be "Perl" (the language) or "perl" (the program), not "PERL".

Your problem is that you can't specify an empty string using qw().
so try:
foreach my $var ( '', 'Hi', 'Fofo' ) { ...
or
foreach my $var ( '', qw(Hi Fofo) ) { ...

++'d! You also posted at the right point IMHO, even if perhaps in
reply to the most complete benchmark at
<http://perlmonks.org/?node_id=638584> would have been more
appropriate. And you may have included the longer portions of code in

Thanks a lot!!
Thank you to all those who have kept us safe by sending wonderful
warning bull-etins......and nothing bad will happen in the next 5 minutes,
no 10, no...in the next hour....enjoy. These did make me laugh, I hope you
laugh some too....
I must send my thanks to whoever sent me the one about poop in the
glue on envelopes because I now have to use a wet towel with every envelope
that needs sealing.
Also, now I have to scrub the top of every can I open for the same
reason.
I no longer have any savings because I gave it to a sick girl (Penny
Brown) who is about to die in the hospital for the 1,387,258th time.
I no longer have any money at all, but that will change once I
receive the $15,000 that Bill Gates/Microsoft and AOL are sending me for
participating in their special e-mail program.
I no longer worry about my soul because I have 363,214 angels
looking out for me, and St. Theresa's novena has granted my every wis h.
I no longer eat KFC because their chickens are actually horrible
mutant freaks with no eyes or feathers.
I no longer use cancer-causing deodorants even though I smell like a
water buffalo on a hot day
Thanks to you, I have learned that my prayers only get answered if I
forward an email to seven of my friends and make a wish within five minutes.
Because of your concern I no longer drink Coca Cola because it can
remove toilet stains.
I no longer can buy gasoline without taking someone along to watch
the car so a serial killer won't crawl in my back seat when I'm pumping gas.
I no longer drink Pepsi or Dr. Pepper since the people who make
these products are atheists who refuse to put "Under God" on their cans.
I no longer use Saran wrap in the microwave because it causes
cancer.
And thanks for letting me know I can't boil a cup of water in the
microwave anymore because it will blow up in my face...disfiguring me for
life.
< BR>I no longer check the coin return on pay phones because I could
be pricked with a needle infected with AIDS.
I no longer go to shopping malls because someone will drug me with a
perfume sample and rob me.
I no longer receive packages from UPS or FedEx since they are
actually Al Qaeda in disguise.
I no longer shop at Target since they are French and don't support
our American troops or the Salvation Army.
I no longer answer the phone because someone will ask me to dial a
number for which I will get a phone bill with calls to Jamaica, Uganda,
Singapore, and Uzbekistan
I no longer buy expensive cookies from Neiman Marcus since I now
have their recipe.
Thanks to you, I can't use anyone's toilet but mine because a big
brown African spider is lurking under the seat to cause me instant death
when it bites my butt.
And thanks to your great advice, I can't ever pick up $5.00 dropped
in the parking lot because it probably was placed there b y a sex molester
waiting underneath my car to grab my leg.
I can no longer drive my car because I can't buy gas from certain
gas companies!
If you don't send this e-mail to at least 144,000 people in the next
70 minutes, a large dove with diarrhea will land on your head at 5:00 PM
tomorrow afternoon and the fleas from 12 camels will infest your back,
causing you to grow a hairy hump. I know this will occur because it actually
happened to a friend of my next door neighbor's ex-mother-in-law's second
husband's cousin's beautician...
Have a wonderful day....
Oh, by the way.....
A South American scientist from Argentina, after a lengthy study,
has discovered that people with insufficient brain activity read their
e-mail with their hand on the mouse.
Don't bother taking it off now, it's too late.

There are also Algorithm::Loops's NextPermute() and NextPermuteNum()
which are pure Perl implementations of an algorithm giving the next
permutation of a list (an array, really, which is modified in place)

You have asked a Frequently Asked Question.
$ perldoc -q balance
Found in /software/perl-5.8.5-0/pkg/lib/5.8.5/pod/perlfaq6.pod
Can I use Perl regular expressions to match balanced text?

As the FAQ answer states, check out Regexp::Common and Text::Balanced.

You did not cross post this message. It was sent only to
comp.lang.perl.misc. If you also sent it to other groups, you must
have done it via multiposting, not crossposting. Please don't do that
again. It's extremely rude.

The reason was, that I first posted the same (english) text accidentally in
the german .perl.misc group. This is probably a bad idea. I didn't do it on
purpose.

No, it's not, at least not by perl.
However, your shell will most likely do this. Try to use single quotes=20
instead of the double quotes:
system("changepw -newpw '$newpw' -oldpw '$oldpw'");
Note that you don't need a LF at the end of a system() string.

Of course, if the password contains a single-quote, this fails. And
if a user is malicious and sets their password to something like this:
x'; rm -rf /;
then your script just deleted your whole system (assuming it runs as
root, which it probably does, since it is changing passwords). Guess
what? You're fired!

Subject: Writing a C++ Style Checker
Message-Id: <1190206842.427137.265760@i38g2000prf.googlegroups.com>
Hi,
I'm new to Perl. I'm trying to use Perl to write a C++ Style Checker
to validate various coding standards followed in our organization.
Some of the things I need to do in this tool include:
- verifying whether identifier naming conventions have been followed
- differentiating between member variables and local variables
(because their naming conventions are different)
- determining method/function boundaries
- identifying control structures such as 'if', 'while' etc to see
whether they are written with code blocks (i.e. { }) all the time
- check whether statements are more than a given width (say 100
column)
- etc. etc.
This need not go in to semantics of the program; what I need is a
basic style checker.
What I see is that parsing line by line independently is not going to
help. This parser needs to build context and remember stuff across
lines to satisfy above goals.
Are there any existing Perl based style checkers? If not, can you give
some advice on how best to structure this program? Or else can you
give some good references on *design* aspects of Perl?
(I have a C/C++ background. So I'm familiar with OO design. I'm trying
to develop a *similar mental model* for Perl programs.)
Thanks in advance,
Ishan.
