BTW: I now have ppm V4, which either starts a GUI or runs specific
actions from the cli, too bad it has not retained a cli of its own.

The first program I wrote in fortran, this century, was called "fattoriale"
because I finished up the half-hearted work of an Italian OP.
I found the activestate executable and have a newer version waiting for me
after I pull the trigger on my OS re-install.

The extra capturing there is quite unnecessary.

With a subexpression anchored to the start, the g-modifier is strange,
but the regexp-optimizer might cope with that.
$string =~ s{ ( ^\w # at the beginning of the line
| \s\w #or preceded by whitespace
)
}
{\U$1}xg;
So split it up:
$string =~ s/ ^ ( [[:alpha:]] ) /\U$1/x ;
$string =~ s/ ( \s [[:alpha:]] ) /\U$1/xg;
Variant:
s/ ^ ( [[:alpha:]] ) /\U$1/x,
s/ ( \s [[:alpha:]] ) /\U$1/xg
for $string;
Silly part:
If =~ would bind to a list, you could write:
$string =~ s/ ^ ( [[:alpha:]] ) /\U$1/x,
s/ ( \s [[:alpha:]] ) /\U$1/xg,
;

Such html-versions of the documentation are most likely on your own

My first reaction was: "please, stick to Perl". But remarks on de
documentation are on-topic in this group.
No, it should not be "from". That doesn't mean that "from" is impossible
there.
Please look up "except for" in your favourite dictionary.
Benchmark inherits from no other class, except for Exporter.
Benchmark inherits from no other class, except Exporter.
Benchmark inherits from no other class, but Exporter.
Benchmark only inherits from Exporter.
Benchmark only inherits from Exporter, and from no other class.
Exporter is the only class that Benchmark inherits from.

Yes, it inherits *from* Exporter, but the phrase is correct English
AFAICS, meaning "with the exception of Exporter".
