I agree this is a good route. I picked up the Learning Perl back in
2000. Read it from cover-to-cover and it was off to the races!

I did eventually purchase the Programming Perl. And I use it only as a
reference when I need some more in-depth information. My poor old
Learning Perl book is dog-eared, highligted, and notated lovingly.

The below mentioned thing is a dos batch file.
Can I write the whole thing in perl without using any modules like
file::compare, etc.

check32 pd k0018f00 > test.log

I don't know. What do fc and check32 do? (I presume find finds a string
in a file (what I'd call fgrep) rather than doing what Unix find(1)
does?).

You almost certainly can. Why do you not want to use modules? That is a
very stupid restriction to place on yourself. It's like saying you want
to be able to type with only one finger.

Hi David,

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make. Maybe you should just
spell it out for me. I think being perfectly clear and straight
forward is the most effective way to communicate, don't you?

I would write a Perl program to do it for me.

I would do it with the m// operator and the print() function.

Suppose a batch file contains something like (some 250 lines like this)

REM //// TEST PCIE LINK ////
Win32 pd k0018f00 > test.log
fc /l good1.log test.log > comp.log
find "no differences encountered" comp.log
if errorlevel 1 goto end
echo Passed XV_UP test.
del test.log
del comp.log

I have written a perl script to edit some of the lines.
My script is
open my $F, '<', $file || die "Cant open $file: $!";
    flock($F, 1) || die "Cant get LOCK_SH on $file: $!";
    while(<$F>)
    {
	    $line_counter ++;
        if ($line_counter == 15)
        {

            	&SUB_Link;
    	}
        sub SUB_Link

            {
	            s/k......./$any variable;
            }
		}
    close $F || die "Cant close $file: $!";
 }
 but htis is not working
can anybody suggest something.

The first suggestion that comes to mind is that you should have

     use strict;
     use warnings;

in the beginning of the script, to make Perl help you detect some kind
of mistakes.

Second: Don't post a script here that does not compile, and just say
that it's "not working". At least try to fix the compilation error(s),
and if you don't know how, explain what error message(s) you get.

Third: Check the Perl FAQ before asking for help. Your specific problem
is covered by this FAQ entry:

     perldoc -q "change one line"

Fourth: There are posting guidelines available for this Usenet group,
that you also should study and follow:
http://www.augustmail.com/~tadmc/clpmisc/clpmisc_guidelines.html

Right idea, but wrong operator. || has a higher precedence than ,. Therefore
this line will be evaluated as
    open my $F, '<', ($file || die "Cant open $file: $!");
I doubt that is what you want. Use "or" instead.

What is this $line_counter thingy? Did you mean $. instead?
    $. The current input record number for the last file handle [...]

Is there a specific reason why you are calling the sub this way? Unless you
know why you are using the &-style you don't want to use it.

You are missing the closing /. This code should not even have passed the
syntax analyser.
And yes, based on the code fragments that you showed this should replace the
text.

Did you read "perldoc -q change":
      How do I change one line in a file/delete a line in a file/insert a
line in the middle of a file/append to the beginning of a file?

See the precedence table in perlop.pod.

   open my $F, '<', $file or die "Cant open $file: $!";

or

   open(my $F, '<', $file) || die "Cant open $file: $!";

> 	    $line_counter ++;

Perl already maintains a line counter for you. Its name is $. (dollar-dot).

>             	&SUB_Link;

   SUB_Link();

You should not use ampersands on subroutine calls unless you know why
you need to use ampersands on subroutine calls.

The s/// operator needs _3_ slashes, you have only 2.

There is no need to m// before s/// since s/// will not do
anything if the match part fails.

>     close $F || die "Cant close $file: $!";

Precedence again.

Hi
Can anyone tell whats the difference between first two and last two of
the following variables. What does it mean by "all links resolved" . I
am new to perl.

$Bin - path to bin directory from where script was invoked
 $Script - basename of script from which perl was invoked
 $RealBin     - $Bin with all links resolved
 $RealScript  - $Script with all links resolved

I cut it from the cpan page
http://search.cpan.org/~nwclark/perl-5.8.7/lib/FindBin.pm

$RealBin and $RealScript probably convert possible symlinks in $Bin
respective $Script to the real locations.

This is a concept that doesn't apply on Windows[1]. Under Unix a
'symbolic link' can be created to a file, a bit like a shortcut but
properly integrated into the OS. Then, if your script was invoked as

    /foo/bar/baz

but /foo/bar is a symlink to /quux then you will get

    $Bin        = '/foo/bar';
    $Script     = '/foo/bar/baz';
    $RealBin    = '/quux';
    $RealScript = '/quux/baz';

[1] Yes, I know about NTFS junctions. I'm fairly sure FindBin doesn't
:).

Not especially relevant, because "links" have nothing to do with Perl.
They are a generic Unix concept.

It means that if $Bin or $Script contain any symlinks, $RealBin and
$RealScript will have all those symlinks replaced with whatever they
actually link to. A "link" is a way of giving a different name to an
existing file or directory.

For example, consider a directory with three folders:
$ ls -l
total 6
drwxrwxr-x   3 plalli   devel        512 Jul 13 14:31 f1
drwxrwxr-x   2 plalli   devel        512 Jul 13 14:31 f2
drwxrwxr-x   2 plalli   devel        512 Jul 13 14:31 f3

The f2 folder contains two files:
$ ls -l f2
total 0
-rw-rw-r--   1 plalli   devel          0 Jul 13 14:31 four.txt
-rw-rw-r--   1 plalli   devel          0 Jul 13 14:31 three.txt

Now I create a symlink to the f2 directory:
$ ln -s f2 new_folder

If I look at the main directory again, I see:
$ ls -l
total 8
drwxrwxr-x   3 plalli   devel        512 Jul 13 14:31 f1
drwxrwxr-x   2 plalli   devel        512 Jul 13 14:31 f2
drwxrwxr-x   2 plalli   devel        512 Jul 13 14:31 f3
lrwxrwxrwx   1 plalli   devel          2 Jul 14 11:41 new_folder -> f2

Notice how the new_folder entry is "pointing" to f2? That means it's a
different name for an existing entry. If I then look at the contents
of new_folder, I'll see the contents of f2:
$ ls -l new_folder/*
-rw-rw-r--   1 plalli   devel          0 Jul 13 14:31
new_folder/four.txt
-rw-rw-r--   1 plalli   devel          0 Jul 13 14:31
new_folder/three.txt

So that's your brief overview of symlinks. In your specific case, if
FindBin had told you that $Bin contains a path with new_folder in it,
$RealBin would contain that same path, but with new_folder replaced by
f2.

Hope this helps,
Paul Lalli

#1 What version of eclipse?

#2 What version of EPIC?

Of course,

clic on Help - Software Update - Search for new feature to install

Create a new site with -> New Remote Site
Name : EPIC
URL : http://e-p-i-c.sf.net/updates/

Be careful if you've got a proxy.
You need to configure it first in:
Window - Preferences - Install/Updates - Proxy Settings

Hope this helps.

And you think that somehow exempts you from following the requests of
the people you would like to help you? How many times in this thread
were you asked to properly quote in your responses? How many times
were you asked to read the Posting Guidelines? Clearly, you felt those
two tasks were beneath you. And yet you continue to ask for our help.

I have no idea what you think the relevance of any of this is.

Why are you posting that? Did you not read *any* of the posts that
asked you to post a SHORT but COMPLETE script that demonstrates your
error? Is this beneath you do, because you're a "professional IT"?

Once again, you post a *requirement*, but no *attempt*. We're back
where we started!

You have thoroughly demonstrated your rudeness in every post you've
made. Good luck to you in your "professional IT" future.
