XML::Simple just uses some other module to do the actual parsing.
What part is slow, the actual parsing, or the XML::Simple part of
the code? Have you profiled it to see? You might be using
XML::SAX::PurePerl behind the scenes, which is going to be slow.

When I get done with RXParse (that I have to rename cause of some SAS
impingement namage) your all going to be using it. The big module parsers
won't (can't) change quickly. Mine is interactive and quick as lightning.
It will be the defacto developer/user parser of choice. Period!

Well, what I want is to convert XML into perl structures, out of which
I would then get data.
Yes, I profiled it, XML::Simple takes most of the time.
I am looking for some simple alternatives, it is killing me.

XML::Parser? It depends a lot on what you're doing and what you actually
want to happen. How big is big?

Well, your certainly not responding to me. So my reply is to the others
who try to help you here. The pro's are directed to you though.
First and last, your one dumb mother fucking retard asshole !!!!!!!!!
Second, to get data into hashes, Simple is about it for Perl.
If given a variable xml document, you can't predict where a particular
layer of data will be. Therefore you can't just hand the entire xml document
to Simple, you just fuckin can't !!!!!!!!!
You have to pick the know layer that you want from the document. The known
layer is the one that has known output that you can address in the code.
You are one dumb sonofabitch!!!!!!

Here's a Unix-centric solution to get the latest file and its timestamp
but see the opendir solution for more portability:
my @ls=`ls -lt`;
die "ls command failed: $?" if $?;
@ls=split ' ', $ls[1];
@array[0,1] = ( "@ls[5..7]", "@ls[8..$#ls]" );

XML::Parser can handle attributes perfectly. What exactly didn't work?

Good advice. Add it to the list at
http://rt.cpan.org/Public/Dist/Display.html?Name=Inline (if it's not already
there) . Probably worthwhile raising it on the Inline mailing list, too.

The problem is that the owner (Ingy) is usually pre-occupied with other
stuff. A few months ago he made some noises about releasing Inline-0.45 ....
but that was a few months ago ....
Eric Wilhelm has made available a patched version of Inline-0.44 at

don't know precisely which issues it addresses.

I haven't seen the code portion of a Perl file that was that big. Other
file types, or __DATA__ sections, sure.
> I *have* seen files so big they nearly crashed my favorite brain. :-)
If you had just broken it into smaller chunks at random
(say, by using the gnu split command), would that have helped your brain?
If not, then you don't have a technical problem about how to get perl to
stick random chunks back together, but rather an intellectual one about how
to take things apart.
I think we are getting at the same thing, just with different levels of
sarcasm :)

Ok, just posted it there. I'd also figured I'd try the ActiveState
site forums, but have been having trouble getting anything to show up
there-- looks like it's all moderated and the moderators are apparently
indisposed. Though frankly, I hate proprietary forum systems, usenet
has been working fine for that purpose for over 20 years now, and it
ain't broke as far as I'm concerned...

Subject: Unable to flush o/p buffer
Message-Id: <1150157972.078412.38780@y43g2000cwc.googlegroups.com>
Hi:
I have been trying to get my PERL script to flush the output buffer
after each and every print statement. I have tried the following code
snippets-none of which are working.
Any help/pointers will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
-------------------------------------------------------
open(OUTPUT,">>my_output.txt");
#within some loop
{
$cfh=select OUTPUT;
$|=1;
print OUTPUT "Some array";
select $cfh;
#$cfh->flush();
#select(( select(OUTPUT), $|=1)[0]);
}
--------------------------------
use IO::Handle;
open(OUTPUT,">>my_output.txt");
#within some loop
{
print OUTPUT "Some array";
#OUTPUT->autoflush(1);
#select(( select(OUTPUT), $|=1)[0]);
}
