Hi all
I'm finishing my university of technology and i wonder what is a
position of Perl (and technologies which uses it) in industry. I can
see that most job offers are related to Java, PHP languages (of course
not only but mostly) and related technologies like J2EE and so on. I
love Perl but i've learnt it (and i'm still learning) just beceuse i
appreciate it potential connected with simplicity (and there is also
one hundred other reasons). I would like to know what is Your opinion,
knowlage and experience with 'industry reality/life'. Is there also a
lot of great jobs, maybe better salaries or something else ... please
share with Your knowledge. thanks in advance.

I don't know that knowing Perl will in and of itself get you a job, but it's
an invaluable tool for your arsenal. For me, my core knowledge is markup
languages (sgml/xml/html) plus web technologies, both of which necessitate
being very adept with Perl (as most jobs in these areas will require some
level of proficiency with Perl, although again it's often not the key
factor).
Knowing Perl will also get you in the door to most jobs that require PHP, as
employers are aware that PHP (and no flame war intended) is a stripped-down
variant of Perl. What most employers are looking for, however, are people
who are able to adapt, unless you're going into a very specific software
house. They want to know you can pick up enough Java to write a program if
they need one, or throw together a PHP page on the fly if that's what they
need.
You can specialize yourself as a Perl-only onr Java-only programmer, but you
might find your options limited, especially if the technology starts to fall
out of favour and you've done nothing else.
Just my two cents...

It seems to me that PHP is more in demand for creating websites than Perl.
However PHP is seriously flawed as a language for doing non-webby
things, so people such as system admins will use Perl and/or shell
scripting, sed and awk. Especially as most systems now come with
Perl already installed.
But the best thing is to subscribe to a couple of job lists
and see what is being asked. Unless you are lucky, you
will probably find that the higher paying jobs will
require practical experience in the commercial world.

When you have a program to write, and you are writing it in Perl, the first
thing you do is sit down and write the program. When you have a program to
write and are writing it in Java, the first you do is hire 10 java
programmers. 8 months later, you hire 20 more.

Probably most people with jobs programming in Perl are not described as
being Perl programmers. They are usually some kind of domain-expert who
happens to use Perl as one of the programmatic tools (often the main one)
for doing the job.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake. My program doesn't die at the
getElementsByTagName , it apparantly fails at the ->item(0) .

The only good reason to use threads, is if you want an easy way to share
realtime data between threads. Things such as progress data for a
progress indicator, or when you want to regex the downloaded results,
and do something in your main program, based on the regex.
Otherwise it is probably more efficient and easier to just fork. There
is Parallel::ForkManager.
But threads are pretty easy once you get the hang of the little details.
One thing to watch out for, is if you run any "exec" from any thread, it
will kill and replace all running threads with the exec'd code.

I don't think you will have a problem specific to LWP as long you don't try
to share/clone LWP objects across threads. Of course, threaded programming
in general is more difficult than non-threaded, so I wouldn't say it will
be a piece of cake, unless you are already experienced in threaded
programming.

Maybe forking is better. I prefer it over threading in most circumstances.
(It seems to be a theme this week). But it is hard to tell without knowing
more about what you are trying to do.
