perldoc -q regular
perldoc -q expression
perldoc -q match
Did you try any of those before posting?
How do I efficiently match many regular expressions at once?

Lexical warnings (use warnings;) are better than -w (if you
have a perl less than 3 years old or so).

Don't put the whole thing in memory unless you need the
whole thing in memory:
while ( <DATA> )
can replace those 2 lines.

Message-Id: <oIZSc.1$u23.40@news.oracle.com>
Hi,
I posted this on comp.editors earlier, so I apologize for this multi-post.
However, I thought it would be great if I knew how to perform the following
using Perl :
I have a file with a number of lines like this :
push @xmlParams,"<?xml version="1.0"?>";
^ ^
^ ^
I need to escape the inner quotes i.e, change " to \" - however number of
times the quotes may appear.
(They will always be balanced, though).
Any pointers on how to do this ?
TIA

Backing off to a higher level, What I /really/wanted to do was to take an
xml file and for each line in it, convert it into the Perl statement. So, I
originally had a file called template.xml which had this :
<?xml version="1.0"?>
...
I was changing it to the Perl statement using :
perl -npi -e 's/(.+)(\n*)/ push \@xmlParams,"${1}";${2}/g' template.xml
However, after the previous post, I changed this to
perl -npi -e 's/"/\\"/g; s/(.+)(\n*)/ push \@xmlParams,"${1}";${2}/g'
template.xml
So that I already have the "s escaped properly after the 1st statement.
Ugly, but works .. Would appreciate Other Ways to do it .. especially in a
single regexp, as my OP required :)
TIA

Since you don't even post what the actual failure message is, let alone
working code that demonstrates the problem, you shouldn't be surprised
you're not getting any help.

How do you parse it without accessing it first?
What does "parse" mean when you say it?

Good. That is how it is supposed to be.
Try everything you can think of first, post to Usenet only after
everything else fails.
Thank you.

How bold.
You "took cuts" in line (perhaps without even knowing it).
You should expect that folks will be annoyed by that.

Please bear in mind that the people you're insulting will never need *your*
help with Perl. You command no respect, and so you get none.
That said, you should go back and work on your reading comprehension skills.
All that has been said in this thread is that failing to following posting
guidelines reduces your chances of getting help. Not decrease them to nil,
just reduce them. Should you spend a few years here answering questions
you'll better understand why this is.

Anyone know of a repository or a PPD for installing Crypt::Blowfish on
Windows running ActiveState Perl v5.8.0 via PPM? AS, being in Canada
and governed by weird Canadian "permits," (more stinking government
intervention in this area of encryption), apparently can't provide quite
a few Crypt::_________ packages (or has chosen not to because, I would
presume, these so-called Canadian permits cost $$$).
Ultimately, I'd like Crypt::Blowfish and not Crypt::Blowfish_PP.
Providing a PPM repository where one could install other Crypt::________
modules would put you into the bonus round.

The uwinnipeg ppm repository is mentioned right at the bottom of the section
you referenced. It often pays not to skim when reading; you could wind up
unable to figure out why split splits the way it does if you go that route.

Ah, my last reply was an attempt to be light-hearted that probably
didn't translate too well. My own twisted sense of humor perhaps. Your
original reply was valuable, I thought.

My first reading of that page only stated that Crypt-SSLeay and
Net_SSLeay could be found at the Winnipeg repository; it never mentions
the other Crypt modules (as a recheck seems to verify -- am I missing
something?), though in hind-sight, it would have been reasonable for me
for me to at least make an attempt see if they were there anyway. It is
a bit misleading for them to highlight only the SSLeay modules and not
mention that ALL of the Crypt module PPDs are there.
Anyway, several here got me pointed in the right direction, my failed
attempt at humor with some not withstanding. And a point can still be
taken from your reply.
Thanks!

And ($numbers[0], $numbers[$#numbers]) can be written as @numbers[0,-1]

Nope. The second millennium ended December 31, 2000, so it is indeed from
the last millennium.
