A moments reflection please. Of the ten messages five claim to be from
google.com, unless I am mistaken google don't do email. Thus this is either a
very stupid bit of spam or someone is trying to get colance a bad name.

Lets not get hasty and do something stupid to colance, it might not be them.

As the other person said, this is usenet, not email. And the point isn't
that the sender address is valid; for spam, it rarely is. The point is
that Colance appear to be spamming the hell out of certain newsgroups.

Hmmm, I wouldn't be that surprised if it was.
Yes, it's plainly stupid spamming *this* much, but it has been known for
companies to pay marketers to get their name out there, only to see the
marketers go *way* over the top and spam everything, everywhere.

The From: parts of the posting gave google.com as a host for the posters email
address. If the reply email address is faked then there is no way for a real
company to get a response to their spam, so, unless they are complete idiots
(and I hesitate to rule it out), the spam may infact be bogus.

No one said that we were doing SMTP, just email and google do not provide an
email service like yahoo or excite.

Subject: PAR / Post install problem / bad signature ...
Message-Id: <7R_Bb.19989$lm1.173646@wards.force9.net>

Any PAR users out there?

I've just built and tested PAR and most things are fine but for one
niggling little issue that isn't addressed by PAR::FAQ.

My resulting standalone binary runs okay but spews forth warnings like
this one:

format error: bad signature: 0x6174545f at offset 78727 in file
IO::File=GLOB(0x8455f04)
  at /path/to/Module.pm line 7

Looks to be one per module. And I don't have a clue where to start.

Other possibly useful info is that I think each of the problem modules
was built without using cpansign -v; those that I do (*now*) build using
Module::Signature always complain about the sig being ok but not being
trusted.

I have GnuPG and Crypt::OpenPGP installed but have never set them up or
registered with a keyserver (if such a thing needs doing).

Not sure whether it's a problem with my install; the Archive::Zip issue
alluded to in the PAR::FAQ (I don't think it is, but...); or a bunch of
problems stemming from my incomplete setup of GnuPG.

Squeek... help...

Thanks,
Iain.

I'm sure google.com appreciates the forged return address on this spam.

Try 'PAR' from cpan.

Hi
I use pp -o program_name program_name.pl  to compile.
But get error message:
Missing }.

I just modify #!perl to # use perl in pp because #!perl do not run.
How to solve that problem ?

Sounds exactly like the circumstances that prompted me to write a Perl
script to do just that: http://www.psyke.org/yggdrasil/

I use it to manage my site www.psyke.org -- all navigation on the site
is generated from the directory structure and the titles of the HTML
documents.

I've tested the script on Windows, and Mac OS X. There are a few
module dependencies, but they are easily installed from CPAN or with
ppm.

I think this is a general property of the ppm utility - it
will install a package under site/lib, even if it's a "core"
package that originally was under lib/. One thing you
could do is delete the old DB_File.pm under lib/ (or,
if you'd rather, rename it, in case you find you need it
in the future).

You know you are right. However I'm running on win 2000 and the
service status tends to come back as an empty hash. probably something
in the policy, or something. All I can get is a list of services that
may or may not be running. Some services return status information but
not the ones I am interested in.

Thanks anyway.

Haven't played with the module in while. Also had another link with more
sample scripts, but can't find it now...

Anyway, try this:

use strict;
use warnings;
use Win32::Service qw[GetServices GetStatus];

my (%services, %status);
GetServices('', \%services);
foreach my $service(sort keys %services) {
   print "$services{$service} [ $service ]\n";
   GetStatus('', $services{$service}, \%status);
   foreach (keys %status) {
                                 # remove this for more info
     print "\t$_: $status{$_}\n" if $_ eq 'CurrentState';
   }
}

When 'CurrentState' has a value of 1, the service is stopped. When the
value is 4, the service is running. See comment in code to get more info
- but as stated in the Win32::Service docs, you'll have to check the
Win32 Platform SDK documentation to see what everything means.

To stop/start a service import StartService()/StopService(), and make
sure that you use the service name (key of the %services hash above) as
the second argument.
